To be fair, at least the English generally grasp 'uno cerveza'. Of course, that's not because of any inherent linguistic sensibility, it's just that they learn in about twelve seconds how to get hold of the most important of comestibles.[/quote]

Interesting - is that a common way of ordering beer these days in Spanish by the US speakers? (or a typo?) Uno denotes a masculine noun while cerveza is feminine so it should be "una cerveza" but perhaps the genders have been semantically bleached already.

I suspect neither of them has any Spanish - hackenslash is an intelligent chap and a Brit, but spearthrower is a troll, unless I'm very much mistaken. Thanks for the link to Klingon - is that as in cling on for dear life!! LOL Will look at that tomorrow.

No, that was part ignorance on my part and part just not bothering to check the gender, which is a sort of ignorance as well, I guess.

No problem! I'd recommend Star Trek as well though

Very much mistaken on two of three points. First, I'm not a Brit, though I do live in Britain. Spearthrower is very much not a troll, but one of the more intelligent and knowledgeable people I know, as well as one of the loveliest. However, he is very unforgiving of certain modes of behaviour, and especially repeat offenders, and he has absolutely no compunction in treating them with the contempt they very much deserve, and utilising language that leaves them in doubt about the contempt part, and to be honest, I'm no different.

You're right about the Spanish, though, at least in my case. Fuck, I haven't even learned English yet.

Any Spaniard would understand it so no big deal :)

Kind of an odd observation from someone who's just rocked up and somehow has already started tossing out random accusations - but I am absolutely intrigued as to what makes you believe that I am a troll - I must be a remarkably persistent one considering I joined this forum in the first moments of its life and have posted here for the majority of the last 12 years!

Oh dear - seems an apology from me is called for. Thanks for putting me right on Spearthrower.

What's really funny is that, if you took a straw poll of all the people that have encountered both of us, I'm reasonably confident I'd be the one described as more likely a troll.

I don't normally get described as a troll - many other things, for sure - but I don't think I convey the sense that I disbelieve what I am saying and am only saying it to wind people up.

Except when I am talking about (scare quotes) "Luxembourg", of course.

Dat nicht ass alles, dummkopf!

I studied German for one year when I was 14 - I only really know how to ask where the cathedral is and that a table to play table tennis on is a tischtennistafel which sounds like sneezing, so I also know how to say bless you on the off chance that any German ever happens to say this in my vicinity! Oh damn, maybe I AM a troll!!

Calling you a troll was way out of order for this newcomer, and I hope you'll accept my sincere apologies. I really don't want to retrace my steps to find the postings which led me to believe you were trolling, but it must have been your strong language which left certain people in no doubt as to what you thought of them and their contributions to this forum. Again, sorry.

No worries - you might end up strongly agreeing or disagreeing with me after some time. Only time shall tell! :)
