Hey Def,

nice work man.
I took a year off this forum to focus on a few academic projects and when I re-visited, I immediately had a look to see what you had uploaded.

That's a pretty personal and honest account of your memories of your earlier self. Not sure I could turn the spotlight on myself in the same way. The artwork is exquisite as always, but the narrative arc is by no means peripheral to the work.

I suspect that you and I are quite different in many ways, but the me that I am now... if you'd told my younger self that this is the way it would turn out, that younger version of myself would have laughed in disbelief. That might be something we have in common.

Keep up the good work.

I have my own particular neuroses, and I don’t expect most to share them, but I hope that people can relate to the idea of following down paths in their lives that weren’t for the best. I really like self-reflection, it’s a kind of vanity, but I’ve always enjoyed the personal in others’ art. One of the ideas I’ve been weighing over the past few years is how to be a good person. It came up as my daughter grows older. I can do a little volunteering here and there, but as an artist, I hope some of my pages spark another to try just a little harder to be good. It’s weird to type out, since I haven’t concretely made this an artist’s statement, but this is where my head is at right now.

Yeah, I just got the new calendar for the academic year at my uni.
Last year the title at the top was Hesei 30, but this year they have just gone with 2019.
(Can hardly believe it, but I came to Japan in Heisei 7!!)

Sometimes I feel these transitional stages of my life and yeah it is definitely an incremental process.

But then I sometimes feel that all of those previous me's are still here. I was in the park with my kids and I suddenly
decided to climb a tree. Something I had not done for over 30 years!
Ha ha it was great fun. I remembered the feel of rough bark on my hands and wedging my knee at the joint of a branch to lever myself up, and I was right back to being 10 years old again.
My little boy (6 yo) got up with me and we had a whale of a time going higher and higher, testing the branches.
Mum looked on with bemusement (and some concern) and said afterwards that there were two little boys up the tree that afternoon!

We often climb trees together now and I even haul up my little girl (3yo), much to mum's dismay!

Cell phone photo taken by me last night, black mamba caught by local reptile conservationist (barefooted!) under a wooden staff hut behind a restaurant. Estimated 2.2 to 2.3m long, very strong, middle feels like solid muscle.
Took a couple of hours to dig him out, lots of damage to the hut in the process.
I was called in to provide light for the hunt, since I am a flashlight enthusiast and collector.

That’s a funny compliment, but I’ll take it! I can only dream about writing with the passion Chick had (minus the hate and madness, which sustained the passion, unfortunately).
