I never got far with Ulysses, but I do enjoy busting out Finnegans Wake, opening it up to a random page and reading till I can't take it anymore!

I was talking about Joyce earlier with someone and I remembered I hadn't listened to this podcast in a while and went to the site thinking there'd be a good backlog by now. I found out that Frank, unfortunately, died in February. He had made it to, page 192, chapter 10, after seven years, and 368 episodes. Little over halfway.

Yes, say what you will about the impenetrable structure, indecipherable plot or the nonstop punning, Finnegans Wake was clearly designed to be read aloud. If only he'd recorded the whole thing I doubt I'd need any other sound for bedtime.

I actually prefer the noisier transfer, his voice sounds more natural and I don't really mind the record noise -- certainly not compared to all the artifacts of the cleanup.
