Re: PS4 announcement.
My PS4 and Vita both showed up last night. I got a few hours in before I had to put it away for Christmas. Really impressed with it and I keep on finding features that I hadn't put much thought into as being almost entire reasons to have bought it. I had grabbed NBA2K14 because I heard how realistic it looked and want to see. No joke, except for the obvious game overlays it would seriously be hard to tell this game from an actual TV broadcast if you weren't paying close attention. And the remote play on the Vita worked seamlessly despite the game not be advertised as remote play capable. It's gonna be tough having to wait a few more weeks before really getting into it and playing some more games.

Shit, did you really pay that much for an XBox One? I know just before launch I couldn't find a PS4 anywhere except on Ebay for obnoxious prices but I waited until 12am ET and Amazon released a few. I expect it would be the same for the XBox One although I suppose it may vary if purchasing outside the US.

No kidding. I went to ebay to buy used remote for oldish AVR for $30, got curious how much XBox One sells for just before launch, then kinda forgot 1-click bid was not a game ;)
It does not launch where I live till perhaps April 14 and while I was "decided" to wait for reviews, more titles and full support (TV integration will not work here atm) I dunno what I was thinking. If I would get it shipped from the US it would probably cost same or even more (VAT/import fees/shipping) but from EU just low shipping.

I was able to get preorder for PS4 launch here for 13.12. just yesterday. Gonna use XBox One HDMI passthrough to play it. After all, XBOx One plays CDs :P Kinda interesting how (worldwide) sales turned out in the context of:

Seriously though, I disappointed the with the PS4s lack of DLNA. It's the one thing I'm really not happy about with it. I'm really hoping they patch it in as I have a dedicated DLNA server and use it daily. Having it on the PS4 would make the ability to quickly switch between games and the dashboard 1000x more valuable to me.

Just looking at launch availability the XBox One seems to be just about as limited as the PS4. Whatever that means.

Hopefully. I still have multiple other DLNA and other streaming capable devices hooked up to the same TV but I really do value being able to quickly flip back and forth between my games and other content. I think this is somewhat of an underrated feature with the new consoles in terms of being entertainment devices and not just game consoles.

UK PS4 Pricing
As someone pointed out:
As someone pointed out:
and...It's cheaper to get the game delivered to your house by next day delivery. For example in Asda(Walmart) BF4 is £47 and shipping next day is £4.50 so the digital is £11.49 more expensive for something that should be cheaper because you're removing the physical costs.
Plus...Not only that, but with my measly 4Mb internet speed, it might even be quicker to get the game delivered than download 30-40Gb of data.
I'm saving £400 for the Steam winter sale this year.Battlefield 4 on PC.
£34.97 from Amazon, free delivery for next day

Re: PS4 announcement.
I'm not surprised with the higher prices (well, non-reduced prices at least) for digital copies through PSN or XBox Live stores. Both the console makers and the publishers still rely heavily on their retail partners for these launches so undercutting them on the games - which is where the profit is - probably wouldn't go over well. I'd guess that in a couple of months post launch we'll see more discounts on digital versions from both.

Re: PS4 announcement.
Speaking of which, referring to the debate about digital content we had earlier, what happens to retail partners when the big players go digital only? Will it ever happen? From where I sit, in the context given, "retail partner" is euphemism for middleman. What happens to prices? Comparing this business to business with books, for example, does not help in such mind experiment.
As I said before and for the reasons stated, I am willing to pay extra for digital, though £11.49 would take some time to digest.

Re: PS4 announcement.
Amazon are starting to sell digital Playstation games and from what I've heard some of them are cheaper to buy from Amazon. I believe they send you a redeem code. So if digital is the future it could still be sold on a competitive market.

Re: PS4 announcement.
One possibility is that retail partners sell digital content either through kiosks or simply by selling cards with codes that are redeemed for digital content at home (which is already being done). Realistically either is probably just a step towards eliminating the middleman altogether as gaming moves towards being nonphysical including the consoles themselves which will heavily reduce the platform makers dependence on retailers.
As for the price, I agree that I'm perfectly happy with paying the same for digital as (current) physical. Also keep in mind that digital prices remaining the same is as much a staving off of a general increase in game prices as it would be if they just reduced prices on digital games. In other words digital prices staying at roughly the same price as what physical games used to be is essentially a discount once you factor in inflation. Game prices jumped essentially 20% between the last two generations so I'm not going to complain when they stay the same between these two over a time span which has lasted several times longer than previous generations.

Indeed, competitive market is what customers want to have. At the moment, as it was noted, publishers make deals with retailers to make sure pricing is the opposite of competitive. I just cant picture it ..

Re: PS4 announcement.
That's a wonderful graphic for the US, double it and you are paying what I pay for games. Unless I get a digital copy of the games I pay at least double that price and sometimes when publishers like being assholes they don't let me just pay the US price with my AUD oh no they change the price on Steam for people in Aus to about double as well. EA does that one a lot.

Has that been an increase over recent years?
