There is still this perception that if one speaks loudly enough to those who do not have English as their first language that they will understand it which is obviously false. This is a consequence of both once having had an Empire and the fact that English is the most common global language. But most common does not mean absolute however. We are traditionally very bad at languages over here. Being an island race does not exactly help either
