:awesome:

The original Enterprise was made by Richard C. Datin Jr., Mel Keys, Vernon Sion and Volmer Jensen.
This video is mostly about the visual effects of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but it starts with Richard Datin briefly describing how he made the 1960s Enterprise models (a 3 ft preliminary and the final large-scale version)...

I don't know much about Deep Space Nine. I had no idea they made a model like that. I'm going to have to watch some of those episodes.

Here's where the original Enterprise was built:

Don't know who owned the Corvair but the Mel Keys, the guy on the left, was a car guy when
he wan't building starships. see

And the guy who owned the shop was into getting off the ground.

And he designed and built these.

And Vern Sion had his own way of expressing his creativity.

And Richard Datin, the man who built the original 3' enterprise and then led the 11 foot effort was fond of trains.

And he did the models for Hooterville!

Enjoyed those vids and links. Excellent craftsmanship!

Not Star Trek, but of related interest.
The 'nzpetesmatteshot' blog is mostly dedicated to 2D matte painting. However, it has a page featuring movie miniatures (models). And it's a very big page, showcasing several dozen photographs of model aircraft, ships, buildings, automobiles, etc., all of them used in special FX shots for the cinema and television. In many of the on-set photographs, the model appears with the film crew, allowing one to see the scale.
Here are just a handful...

Filippo Guidobaldi with ship miniatures for Christopher Columbus (1949)

Giant man? No, it's model-maker Emilio Ruiz del Rio with some of his superbly crafted buildings and cars.

The Warner Bros. model shop in the 1940s...

Howard and Theodore Lydecker with model train in a model canyon, and painted backdrop...

Model ship in a studio tank (with 'wind machine' at left)...

Filippo Guidobaldi, at left, poses with a model suburb. From A Place of One's Own (1945)...
Image

Model buildings from War of the Worlds (1953)...

A model warship from In Harm's Way (1965) is big enough to float the movie's director...

Saw that too. Cool car. I once had a boss that had two of them.
