I know it. Do you?

Post by knowit »

Feel free to be skeptical about the title. But from what I have found at many forums, if the truth is over in one direction, the vast majority of people will go as far in the other direction as possible.

Thank you; I will do exactly that!

And welcome to the forum.

Truth's a funny beast. I'm more inclined towards evidence than truth. The latter requires a little too much omniscience, whereas evidence is available for all.

Hello, welcome to the forums!
Feel free to be skeptical about the title. But from what I have found at many forums, if the truth is over in one direction, the vast majority of people will go as far in the other direction as possible.
I have to say the title isn't something that seems all that amenable to scepticism, it lacks a referent. Perhaps it evokes suspicion more than scepticism?

As far as forums go I'm not certain there's any generalisation to be made. If you were thinking of, say, the consensus on Astrology forums about the effect of the Zodiac on our lives or the consensus on alternative medicine forums about the risks of vaccinations, then it seems likely (and would fit with my own experiences) that on some truth-apt subjects there are forums where the consensus definitely goes in the opposite direction to the truth.

On the other hand if I went to a physics or science forum and asked for an explanation of the special theory of relativity I would almost certainly get something that was truth apt and correct.

What sort of subjects and what sort of forums did you have in mind? Are those subjects even the sort of things about which truth is the appropriate label?

Right on, bro. Teach the controversy!

But be quick about it. You don't have much time. As you have probably already discovered, sockpuppet accounts get shut down fairly quickly.

I was skeptical until I read the evidence on the front page.
