The Matrix is a 'trans metaphor', Lilly Wachowski says



The Matrix films are about being transgender, the trilogy's co-director says.

"That was the original intention but the world wasn't quite ready," says Lilly Wachowski, who came out as trans along with her sister Lana after the films came out.

Fans have speculated about potential meanings behind the iconic films and Lilly confirmed the theory to Netflix.

"I'm glad that it has gotten out," she said.

The Matrix is about realization that the brain does not care. Then there is the never made Return to the Matrix - where living in the matrix is actually cool and eco-friendly and the brain does not care - was never made only because who would be the bad guys?

Saying ‘The Matrix’ is a trans allegory is not wrong. It’s a worthwhile interpretation of the film.

And it ends with a suitably jaundiced (and probably accurate) observation...

Coincidentally, there is also a fourth ‘Matrix’ movie in the works and set to hit theaters – if those are ever a thing again – next year. Sounds like a pretty good reason to try and kick up conversation about why the 1999 film is oh-so-relevant today.

Yes, and the much-loathed sequels are still worth a watch, IMO, on account of those special FX. The highway sequence in 'Matrix Reloaded' is especially good.

And the Architect scene in 'Reloaded' at least gave us this parody scene (with the great George Carlin) in 'Scary Movie 3'...

I guess I can see elements in The Matrix that work as a metaphor for being trans. I'm not sure they have all that much to say about it though.

The first film was legitimately great either way.

Having missed the trans metaphor altogether when I watched The Matrix, I regarded the movie as a vulgarised adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave new World. The action scenes left me cold. So cold I fell asleep well before the movie's end, and I did not bother catching up with the unwatched part.

Huxley probably plagiarised Yevgeny Zamyatin's novel We, which was published eleven years earlier, but it remains worth reading in its own right. What it lacks in action scenes (thank goodness), it makes up with philosophical substance.
