Right now there are 520 Satsuma Meiji Vases offered on ebay. Asking prices range from $10.43 to $24,000. I suggest ebay is a good starting point for you to do some homework.

ancient? look bub, you don't call 'ancient' something that's barely 150 years old. and let's face it, that vase is garish, even if that was the taste of the time in Japanese export porcelain.

Cool. I see stuff like that at yard sales and flea markets all the time. Turn it upside down, maybe it has a Bed, Bath, And Beyond sticker on the bottom.

It's a vase, it holds water for flowers. Is there something else they do, and I've been underestimating them my whole life? Granted in the caveman days, that was worth the price of a whole cave. Something to carry water with besides your bladder!
Or if you've ever seen the beginning of "The Gods Must Be Crazy". That's one masterful stretch of film.

Someone has placed a similar looking one to the above on ebay's auction block. Starting price is £9.99. With just under four days to go nobody has put in a bid for it yet.

The Wikipedia article about Satsuma ware is rather damning. According to it, later period Satsuma ware is regarded by art dealers and collectors as rubbish. In Japan it is regarded as betrayal of Japanese values. A lot of the stuff is mass produced and there is no shortage of counterfeits.

Based on the above I'd be surprised if Aufbahrung will get more than £25 for his piece.

I did try this with a ashtray one time somewhere. Same effect. Wanted to start a discussion on antiques, change the moribund atmosphere. I think it is quite a nice vase, in the correct setting, perhaps a 1920s opium den or brothel. You all lack my imagination...I guess?

Let's just say the negative threads I start are all winners around here, so I'm trying my hand at something positive for a change.
Vases. Shimazu crest along with obvious baroque expertise in the enamel etc marks this one out as genuine , and so of mid to max value range for this style of pottery. Won't find that info in a wiki though.

Your vase was made somewhere between 1900 and 1940. It is bottom of the barrel stuff. You'll find out when you put it up for sale.

Try upping your delivery then. A jpeg of a vase with nothing more than 'valuation?' is going to get the responses it deserves.

Try looking at piper's "The "What Is This?" Thread" - If piper can make rusty bits of tat entertaining, I'm sure a thread about ming vases can be started without sending it's audience into a coma.
