Free will, god and morality

Sam Waters, Sheffield University

The Judeo-Christian religions say we have free will to create our own fate. But the idea of a benevolent and omniscient god causes problems for this idea of free will. How does this type of god allow us to act in ways that consign us to hell?

And what of god itself? Sam will explain why omniscience is a problem for god's own free will. If a god is omniscient it has no control over what it does either.

Sam Waters is waiting to be awarded his PhD and has won the Peter H Nidditch award for excellence in Philosophy.

Mike Granville, our secretary, is giving a talk on: 'Is the Best Society for Religion a Secular Society?' It is at Shirley House, 31 Psalter Lane, Sheffield S11 8YL on Wednesday 30th October 2013 at 7.30 pm

It should be an interesting evening and I am sure that he will appreciate a few friendly faces in the audience, who will no doubt ask awkward questions to make him feel at home.

If a state school is designated as "a school with a religious character" it is exempt from the requirement not to discriminate on grounds of religion or belief in relation to admissions even though that school may be funded entirely through general taxation. This means that admissions criteria may give preference to members of that religion. Is this fair? We don't think so.

The Little Atoms Road Trip: A Scientific Odyssey Across America

Neil Denny is the producer and presenter of the Little Atoms Radio Show and podcast. Neil was the recipient of a Travelling Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, and in May 2012 he embarked upon a month long, 6614 mile road trip across America.

The aim of the trip was to produce a series of podcasts which present a wide-ranging overview of science and skepticism from an American perspective. Driving from San Francisco to Boston and calling in at Phoenix, Santa Fe, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York along the way, Neil recorded 39 interviews with scientists and science writers including Ann Druyan, Leonard Susskind, Kip Thorne, Priya Natarajan, Paul Davies, George Church, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Mary Roach, Edward Stone and Sara Seager.

He recorded interviews at some major sites of scientific interest, including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, The Los Alamos National Laboratory, and The American Museum of Natural History. Child Marriage – the Causes, Challenges and How We Can Fight It

Geoff Densham, Plan UK

Geoff Densham, a volunteer with Plan UK will present a talk on the challenges faced in the campaign to put an end to child marriages. Not an easy subject to address, his presentation will include how Plan UK is campaigning to put an end to it, addressing issues such as education, religion and community, We will also hear the story of a survivor of child marriage.

Geoff, an engineer by trade, has been speaking for Plan UK for five years. He has also been a sponsor of Plan's work in the Dominican Republic and Haiti for over 20 years, including raising money for specific projects e.g. girls scholarships.

(Not an event, but I thought it might be of interest.)

Three friends married women from different parts of the world...

The first man married a Greek girl. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man married a Thai girl. He gave his wife orders that she was to do ...all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from Yorkshire. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. The first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything either but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he urinates.

That Guilty Look: The modern Face of Physiognomy

Kathryn Ford

The notion that one can judge a person’s character on the basis of their facial appearance is an idea that dates back to the ancient Greeks and for a short period, the practice of physiognomy was considered scientific. Despite the fact that this ancient practice has long been discredited, the idea that one can “read” a person’s character simply by looking at their face still persists within folk psychology. In fact, this belief and our natural tendency to judge people on the basis of facial appearance has a surprisingly pervasive effect on all of our lives.

In this talk Kathryn Ford will look at the modern face of physiognomy trying to answer questions such as; why do we judge people as soon as we see them? How accurate are these judgements? And does facial appearance effect how people are treated within the criminal justice system?

Warning: This talk will involve some discussion of rape.

Kathryn Ford received a BSc in Neuroscience and Psychology from Keele University in 2011 and an MSc in Evolutionary Psychology from Brunel University in 2012.
