Remastered Apollo images....wow.

Since 2007 the Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project has brought back 2000 images from 1500 analog tapes. The first ever picture of an earthrise. As Keith Cowing said “an image taken a quarter of a fucking million miles away in 1966. The Beatles were warming up to play Shea Stadium at the moment it was being taken.” To find more of those images go to their website, but I warn you those images are huge.

Is it "just" digital remaster, or are the old images digitally mixed with more recent ones ?

... and what has a recent image of the Occator crater on asteroid Ceres got to do with the Apollo Moon missions? :ask:

They've just spruced up the fakes that were created with miniatures a few decades ago! Those originals were made deliberately blurry in order to conceal imperfections in the models. With some digital dickery they can now sharpen the pictures without revealing the joins, blobs of glue, etc. on the model sets.

:conspiracy:

Seriously, though...
I think it's mostly a case of applying noise reduction to enhance clarity.

That's what I thought. It would be interesting to compare the result to recent pictures.
