The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

Society needs the theory of natural selection and an understanding of genetics and mutation because it is fundamental to biological science and medicine. That is kind of an important every day thing. The witch doctors and the theists are not magically containing Ebola. That is science and medicine.

Why select evolution as having no practical use? The idea of education is to prepare children for life in a modern society, not to turn each and every one of them into a practitioner of every subject they are taught. How many future chemists will need to know much history, and vice versa? Yet both need a grounding in each subject to be informed citizens.
