Hairy Tare Vicia hirsuta. slender short annual, almost hairless. Leaflets 4-10 pairs, tendrils sometimes unbranched, flowers 1-8 in spike, pale lilac, 4-5mm; sepal-teeth longer than tube. Flowering period May-August. Pods downy. Found in grassy places throughout Europe. Smooth Tare Vicia tetrasperma has 3-6 leaflet pairs, 1-2 larger (4-8mm) deep lilac flowers and hairless pods. Slender Tare Vicia tenuissima has 2-5 leaflet pairs, 2-5 still larger (6-9mm) deep lilac flowers, and pods downy or hairless; flowering period June-August; Britain, France & Germany, southern. Smooth Tare and Slender Tare both have calyx-teeth shorter than tube and tendrils usually unbranched.
