We did a close examination of the USGS maps and determined our hosts house is okay but likely no access.

Image

It's right around that 1955 purple blocth between 24 and 8.

Not sure they have access tho.

gets worser and worser for our hosts.... they are just a couple hundred meters uphill from the rift rapidly becoming a new crater

will certainly be an interesting view from the porch

Oh, bullshit.

The Hawaiian island chain is the trace of a mantle hotspot on the Pacific tectonic plate as it moves across the hotspot. If you know how old are the oldest islands in the archipelago, you'll know how long the hotspot has been active, at a minimum. The Big Island is now situated above the hotspot. The plate is moving northwest-relative, and so the locus of active volcanism moves southeast-relative. There is not a fucking crack in the world unless you want to have a look at mid-ocean ridge volcanism and exercise poetic license.

What we see are a lot of aging hippies who somehow made enough money selling crystal healing that they could afford to settle on the south coast of the Big Island, and whose houses are now buried under a rather tiny lava flow, as eruptions go. You can reference the Deccan Traps, or the Karoo or Snake River Plain (SRP) basalts for more edification. If they'd understood more about geology than they do about crystal healing, they'd have made different real estate plans. Hotspots last long enough so that humans can become smart enough to figure out hotspot volcanism or stupid enough to make other humans rich who sell shit like crystal healing.

Are you fucking ESL challenged so you don't understand sarcasm ...go shit in other threads. You are a lightweight....lots of pretend knowledge little substance.....much strutting.

I chatted on line with one of the authors linking the Deccan traps to the dinosaur bolide.....he gave me a heads up about that paper. He was a major researcher of the Chicxulub crater and wrote a terrific book - I reviewed on this forum ....and it was his co-worker who made the Deccan link I'd always wondered about.

I don't need your illiterate brand of schooling in the science fora. :coffee:

Sorry, Macdoc. It's just not clear to me that you're being sarcastic in failing to note any technical details until somebody reminds you to look them up and post a link to them.

You can look stuff up on the internet and send emails to academics? Wow! What a scholar you are.

I've read the books by the people that do this for a living and corresponded with them....so yeah I have a scholarly interest and a fuck of a better understanding of the English language than you.

My partner and I spend money and time chasing volcanoes and I don't really appreciate your snarky - pretend erudition comments which add absolutely nothing to a thread in the science forum. I've read the scientific literature on plate tectonics since I was kid and have a constant and continuing interest ...I read numerous science journals and articles daily to keep up with fields I'm interested in. I've walked the lava fields this year before the eruption and the inside of Kilauea 4 decades ago -which brought me back to the Big Island in March

I'll be back to our hosts next year seeing what becomes of rift 8 which is only a few hundred meters downhill of where we stayed - we home they can accommodate as they were just uphill of the current major flow source.

Image

and reminds me very much of the volcano we chased in Iceland in January as the side cauldrons appear similar in size.....and yes that's my photo below..not something gleaned off the internet.

Image

....so I have more than a casual interest in volcanoes and absolutely none in your puerile comments that are without any value at all to a thread.in Earth Science :nono: :coffee:

You're hell on wheels when it comes to posting pretty pictures of orange lava fountains. It's not clear to me that you understand anything other than that they're a similar color to your Halloween pumpkin, but with larger plumes of volatiles above.

Glad we got to see the tide pools and surrounding area .
Just gorgeous
Image
There was no place like Kapoho in all of Hawaii
John Burns, scientist
“Kapoho Bay was a very important recreational place for people in this area,” said Steven Colbert, an associate professor in marine science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. “There aren’t a lot of places here where you can access the shoreline and get in the water easily. And this was one of those areas. It was also a very important research spot for us scientists.”

...what a heart break for the home owners.....but then they knew the risks

Image

After: an aerial view of the Kapoho Bay, including the tide pools, which is now covered in fresh lava

The loss to scientists has been great. “There was no place like Kapoho in all of Hawaii,” said John Burns, who spent a decade studying coral in the tide pools, said. “That entire habitat is gone now.”

Rift 8 close by our host's house continues its island building gush of very hot lava down to the sea

See those two parallel ridges just to either side of the centerline of the flow? What's pushing those ridges up?

What you're seeing is non-Newtonian rheology in a natural setting. There's plenty of theory, if you want to wade through it (you won't):

https://www.whoi.edu/fileserver.do?id=2 ... 10&p=17274

Read section 2.4 to learn about normal stresses, or just go on flooding the thread with pictures of sunsets and orange-glowing lava, instead of earth science.

Of the two of us, here, the lightweight isn't yours truly.

GENERAL MODNOTE
The staff request some posting discipline in this thread: 'Are you fucking ESL challenged' and accusations of being a lightweight or illiterate are examples of inflammatory posting behavior. How about if everyone finds a way to make their arguments without resorting to any form of "You are a <insert epithet here>"?

still in awe at the change in the peaceful neighborhood we visited at Leilani

We would have a front row seat to this just a few hundred meters downslope

Very curious if host house is still habitable. Still planning a return next year.
