The Hawaiian island chain is the trace of a mantle hotspot on the Pacific tectonic plate as it moves across the hotspot. If you know how old are the oldest islands in the archipelago, you'll know how long the hotspot has been active, at a minimum. The Big Island is now situated above the hotspot. The plate is moving northwest-relative, and so the locus of active volcanism moves southeast-relative. There is not a fucking crack in the world unless you want to have a look at mid-ocean ridge volcanism and exercise poetic license.

What we see are a lot of aging hippies who somehow made enough money selling crystal healing that they could afford to settle on the south coast of the Big Island, and whose houses are now buried under a rather tiny lava flow, as eruptions go. You can reference the Deccan Traps, or the Karoo or Snake River Plain (SRP) basalts for more edification. If they'd understood more about geology than they do about crystal healing, they'd have made different real estate plans. Hotspots last long enough so that humans can become smart enough to figure out hotspot volcanism or stupid enough to make other humans rich who sell shit like crystal healing.

I chatted on line with one of the authors linking the Deccan traps to the dinosaur bolide.....he gave me a heads up about that paper. He was a major researcher of the Chicxulub crater and wrote a terrific book - I reviewed on this forum ....and it was his co-worker who made the Deccan link I'd always wondered about.

My partner and I spend money and time chasing volcanoes and I don't really appreciate your snarky - pretend erudition comments which add absolutely nothing to a thread in the science forum. I've read the scientific literature on plate tectonics since I was kid and have a constant and continuing interest ...I read numerous science journals and articles daily to keep up with fields I'm interested in. I've walked the lava fields this year before the eruption and the inside of Kilauea 4 decades ago -which brought me back to the Big Island in March

I'll be back to our hosts next year seeing what becomes of rift 8 which is only a few hundred meters downhill of where we stayed - we home they can accommodate as they were just uphill of the current major flow source.



and reminds me very much of the volcano we chased in Iceland in January as the side cauldrons appear similar in size.....and yes that's my photo below..not something gleaned off the internet.

You're hell on wheels when it comes to posting pretty pictures of orange lava fountains. It's not clear to me that you understand anything other than that they're a similar color to your Halloween pumpkin, but with larger plumes of volatiles above.

Pretty firm on returning next year after discussing it with partner. Sis has 60th Bday ...good reason to visit a volcano eh.

Yay - just heard from our hosts...the house is okay tho not liveable at this point due to SO2. Maybe by the time we are ready to go back it will be.
