What a narrow minded view.

Because she will have to live in a community of people who think and believe different things from her. If she only ever enquires about things she already believes in then her life long education will be deficient.

I don't remember having to go to a synagogue or mosque to learn about Judaism or Islam. Pretty sure I read about them in a book.

Books are not always the only or the best process for learning about how to live with people.

I don't see how church has any relevance to learning how to live with people

No, I can see you don't.

Why visit a church

I think bringing them to the Water Super Fun Adventure Park and letting her go off and play with other kids will do more to help her learn to get along with others than taking her to a boring church just sitting there staring around for three bloody hours talking to no one. But whatever you're into.

I'm into widening children's perspectives as far as they will go, and a bit beyond that.

I've been to churches of many denominations, multiple synagogues, but never a mosque. I definitely wouldn't say that I've had "fun" each time I've attended such places, but I certainly recommend it, if only for curiosity's sake, plus, even if you don't necessarily believe the "woo", the messages are universal life lessons, they are about being good people, bettering oneself, and treating others with compassion and forgiveness. I think being taken to such places as a child is actually a good idea. For a non-believer I might liken it to going to an interactive museum of sorts. For a child I think the analogy is pretty apt as well. You certainly wont be forced to stay the whole time (I don't know anything about Mormons, but in my experience with other Christian denominations (there is some debate as to whether Mormonism is a Christian denomination, in America 97% of Mormons believe it is so I give them the benefit of the doubt) and Judaism, no one is required to stay) just make sure you sit somewhere where you can easily get up and leave if you feel so inclined without disrupting the service.

I would be totally open to going to a mosque, I think what's keeping me away more than anything is that I don't know the customs and would undoubtedly make myself look like an ass not knowing what to do when I was there. Oh, and that I don't have many muslim friends; actually, I'm not sure I have any.

Massive difference between learning about a religion and being indoctrinated. I am certain the LDS church is not terribly interested in the former.

So am I. Church is not the place for that. Church is dull, pointless and tedious. I can't imagine any child actually wanting to be there when the Water Super Fun Adventure Park is the other option.

Simple solution. Water Super Fun Adventure Park one weekend. Church another. I think one of them costs less than the other to attend as well.

Can't think of any reason to go to one of those places when something more fun/interesting is available except to look at nice art or architecture at times when no service is on. I'm not sitting there listening to bollox being spouted by self-righteous and archaic clergy

Anyway I'm taking to much of Chris's thread. I honestly didn't meqn to. If Chris wants to take his daughter it's up to him of course. My own kids will never be stained by religion if I can help it. Though with people dying on me and having Catholic funerals it may be unavoidable.

Well how could you think anything different @Animavore? You have obviously already drawn your conclusions about church and made a sweeping generalization about clergymen. You already seem to believe to know exactly what you are talking about. If that is the case, and your mind is already closed on the subject, no one could possibly give you a good reason to go.

I would suggest a good reason would be to dispel your misconceptions. That would, of course, require you to open your mind on the subject, however, which I'm not sure you have any interest in doing.

I've been to mass loads of times. Dragged kicking and screaming every week as a child. I know exactly what goes on in these places. I don't have any misconceptions. My life is happier without the tedium of church on a Sunday morning.

I've heard quite enough about this "open mind" horseshit. It's a euphemism for "credulous". Not every half baked idea bears consideration. Religion and it's trappings, fall neatly, nay, define that category of ideas.

It appears you have.

At the very least you are consistent in your never ending assault against free thought. Your dogmatic approach is quite impressive, and certainly rivals the dogmatism that runs rampant among those of "faith".

Widening perspectives is not exactly what religions are renowned for. Even less churches.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

Learning about religion is widening, learning from them is the opposite.
