The Colorado potato beetle (from central Mexico?), if accidentally introduced to new areas, may unfortunately have a say in all of this too.

Didn't know potatoes were tetraploid. But now that I do, I can see how that's going to complicate selective breeding ...

From what I remember from school, conifers are generally not polyploid and have incredible amounts of variation with the exception of Sequoia which is from the cypress family.
