'Bike country No 1': Dutch go electric in record numbers

E-bikes now outsell standard bicycles in Netherlands, with quality prized more than price

Asked whether rising prices would begin to put the Dutch public off the two-wheeled mode of transport, RAI’s Floris Liebrand said: “Not in the Netherlands. It is in our culture, in our blood.

“We are bike country No 1 in the world so we are used to investing in innovative bikes so there is difference there compared with other countries, including the UK.

“For us it quite normal to spend €1,000 on a bike. An average for an e-bike is over €2,000 but that is in our culture. We believe in the quality of our products. There are e-bikes of €700 or €900 but they are from south-east Asia and the quality is lower.”

On the news last night a schoolkid was asked how he got the money and replied filling shelves in the weekend is enough.

They double the easy commute distance, at least. I’m not a big fan of them in most use cases. But, they have their applications. You’re likely to see more speed related cyclist injuries, as well as conflicts between human powered and e-bikes.

I could use one here with all the hills. Or one of those motor kits to put on your own bike, that would be better. I rode an ebike once but it weighed a ton. Not good if you run out of power out on the road somewhere.

There has not been any significant increase with the standard e-bike (25kph). The fast pedelecs are not allowed on urban cycle lanes.

I know, that’s pretty funny. No kid ever figured out how to get more speed out of their motorized toys.

I'd like to see someone pedal up the hill above my house. :nono: If I want to go bike riding south I have to push it for 3/4 mile at like a 45 degree angle. :nono: I don't think a battery operated bicycle motor could do it either.

I needed a motorized bike in Bristol for my commute. The road home was tough, maybe like trying to pedal up a ladder lol

The hills are the reason I don’t cycle in Luxembourg City, though I used to at Munich.

Not very big either. How do you survive there? Very pristine. Played a rugby game there once. It was difficult finding a drink.
