Red Road flats demolished for opening ceremony
Blocks of flats which have been part of Glasgow's skyline for almost 50 years will be blown up as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
Five of the six remaining Red Road flats will be brought down in just 15 seconds in the biggest demolition of its kind ever seen in Europe.
The event will be shown live on a 100m (328ft) wide screen at the Celtic Park ceremony and to a huge TV audience.
The 30-storey structures were built in the mid 1960s.
The original eight tower blocks housed more than 4,000 people and were once the highest flats in Europe.

It's kind of sad to see buildings demolished. All the hopes of the original builders and the first people to eagerly take up residence are ended in a pile of dust and rubble. There is a sense of failure and of wasted opportunities. Successful architecture - designed well and built to last - should continue serving the community for hundreds of years. It becomes part of the landscape.

When a building is demolished it is better to hide the shame by doing it quietly out of sight.

I know what you mean.

However a lot of post war housing was poorly built, badly maintained and neglected by the council's. These high rise flats where ment to provide light and comfort, but ended up being slums in the sky. The shame is that, in Scotland, the tenement housing they replaced, where better able to be adapted to the modern world.

Is there separate teams for the UK countries or one big English one?

Sheffield held the "World Student games". It was a financial disaster, took years for the city council to pay off the costs, probably still paying for it.

I hope it goes well for Glasgow.

The biggest farce of all times. Who is interested in the Commonwealth? Be honest except for Liz herself. What earthly importance does it have. It still bears the stink of empire.

Well I suppose it is one way for second grade athletes to win a medal of sorts.
