A cheap idea for Jamest or anyone if going to DC is to stay at the Greenbelt Park campground for $20 a night. They have showers, flush toilets, and good drinking water. It's near the metro train (use College Park station) and Nasa Goddard is right up the street (they have a free visitor center). Also nearby are dozens of restaurants, gas stations, dept stores, a mall, etc. It's a safe place as the Park police have headquarters at the entrance to the park. It's operated by the national parks system and well-patrolled. Also the woods there are very pretty and quite old- looking with large trees and lots of downed trees, etc. You're guaranteed to see a squirrel, and will probably see deer as well. Lots of neat bugs too.

That's a very good idea. It could seriously cut down on TSA screening times and illegal immigration would just dry up. We'll just send them a photocopy of a job and food. Why hasn't Trump thought of this?

I have to confess that I purchased a fake 'book safe' recently. It didn't cost much, about 10+ quid. Looks the part to be honest, an English dictionary which opens up to reveal a locked safe. Would have fooled me, but what doesn't?

The idea is to leave it in a locked suitcase and maybe leave the passports/documents/keys in it. I was going to use hotel room safes until I discovered that there's an override key to every hotel safe. Too many cuntz in the world.

I have recently printed out copies of passports and done the icloud thing. A pain in the arse, but done. I am taking with us numerous documents and tickets etc., not least money/cards/IDs. There's no way that I want to be lugging these things around next to my balls (ScotD) for a month. If my balls looked any bigger the terror-fuzz would demand that I drop my pants. Next thing you know, my balls are all over instagram/whatever. No, thank you.

I guess I'm going to have to accept that there's no guarantees, even if you have your valuables stuck up your arse. I'm going to have to trust to fate now, and that's that.

ETA: I have my tickets/documents now. All via e-mail, which I had to print. The good news is that British Airways recognise my reference and so, barring fucking disasters/illness, we're actually going over there in 19 days time. Doesn't time fly?*

*[new thread idea]Eta: Hold on james me ol' china. Could time in principle 'move'? [/new thread idea]

James, urgently sort out your seat allocations, days when turning up at checkin early to get good seats are gone, most people select seats and frequently pay for this privilege a few weeks before flying. A row of 4 will usually only happen for the middle sections. Better to try and get a window 3 and then the aisle in middle row or 2 and 2 if the aircraft configured this way, don't worry about the those in the back of the aircraft unless you have tight connections, they will be easier to get.
Carry your passports, really you are a foreigner and need to have good ID close. Of course make copies and email them to yourself as well as photocopies, of tickets and bookings as well.
Is really not that difficult, imagine yourself as a foreign tourist in your own country, what should you do?

I think I've booked seats on the plane though it was a bit of a balls-up (on their part) and I had to speak twice to BA customer services. We'll see. Today I booked taxis for the outgoing and return legs of our journey, so it's starting to seem real. Fuckin' expensive though those taxis - they'll cost (combined) about £160 + tips, but it beats fannying around on public transport - which ain't cheap either.

I've got several other things to do before next Weds, including booking one-or-two New York gaffs. I'm definitely going up at least one of those tall skyscrapers there. Having done some research I'm currently opting between either/both Top of the Rock (good views of Central Park) and/or One World Observatory (the tallest - I've heard that you can actually see the curvature of the Earth? - and closest to the SoL). I've decided that although the ESB is the most iconic (and therefore probably busiest) it's lift system seems slow and it's too close to mid-town to give me the views I crave most. Having not been though, if anyone wants to convince me otherwise before I finally book then be my guest.

We're also doing some sort of cruise in the harbour (inc. SoL) and the 911 museum. Other than that, we'll play it by ear, though Macy's seems like a definite stop. We're in NY for 3.5 days, so enough time to soak in the sights/culture.

I haven't given much thought to Philly (I know little of this place especially) or Washington DC though, so if anyone wants to suggest things I'd be thankful. I'm limiting museum/gallery time unless free (and even then so, as sights/culture/experience is our primary concern). History is a concern as well, but mainly American history.

I've hardly even considered Orlando/Disney at all. I'll probably read about that as I gradually head South.

Maybe someone can suggest things for me to do in Phila too. I've gone a few times but can't think of much to recommend to a family of four visiting from overseas.
Pretty urban scenery around the river. Umm, the river is pretty cool. The liberty bell is a big bell, no kidding, but probably not internationally impressive. The rocky statue is cool, but not internationally interesting. Pennsylvania is cool because it's not Maryland or Ohio. :shifty:

Well we're in Philly for just a few days but on one of those days we're using the car I've hired from there to visit Amish country.

You might like that, but it personally doesn't interest me. At least you can see a little of the beautiful PA countryside, if that interests you.
I was only kidding about PA, as a whole it's one of my favorite states that I've visited and is cool on it's own.

I had no idea that PA was beautiful from a scenic perspective, so you've just piqued my desire to get out there.

We're not visiting Amish country to become converted, by the way. It will be an interesting cultural/social experience for us all.

Of course not, but bear in mind that Amish isn't a very common or well-known culture in the US. I have them within 10 miles of me and don't know very much about what they do, aside from let their horses shit all over the roads, farm, do carpentry and sell pies. They're not commercialized around here, though supposedly there's an Amish store somewhere. I don't know where that would be, there aren't a lot of "2018" stores around and it isn't around any of those.
PA has mountains and forests across much of the state. I'm not familiar with where you're driving if going from Philly to Gettysburg and heading south, but imagine it will be hilly and very green.
