I thought he would go on for ever...

The world will miss him.

I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

We have lost the Einstein of our era - position available...

Is it even possible with the breadth of current knowledge and variety of specialization for one person to have such an impact any more, except in science education?

Feynman is only 30 years gone, so maybe an era is only as long as a generation. I still mourn his passing. Hawking actually lived longer than Feynman did, amazingly enough, through much hardship. His light will shine as brightly in another 30 years.

We have lost a real colossus, in the genuine sense of the word.

I remember it being reported, that because of his condition, he was rendered unable to use pen and paper like the rest of us, so he had to do all those supergravity calculations in his head. How many people, even among the top flight physics community, can handle four-dimensional Ricci calculus in their heads without visual aids? Hawking could. That alone tells you the measure of today's loss.

I used to love on animated TV shows his 'voice' and caricature would come up and you'd wonder if it was him or they were just using his vocal likeness and then his name would appear in the credits.

Bowen was all right, but Bullseye was part and parcel of the long, dark teatimes of the soul that were Sunday afternoons spent at my grandparents as a child, along with Songs of Praise and nothing to read except The People's Friend, if you'd forgotten to take a book with you.

*shudders*

We did get a good tea though.
