I heard medical examiners we're trying to determine the cause of death? Doesn't seem necessary if you hanged yourself.

Must do some reading.

Big time bummer. Of the big 4 named, I like AC the most, follwed by Nirvana, but Pearl Jam Ten was a great album.
Robert Plant was a good singer? Good in the studio but I thought he sucked ass live. He ruined their concerts, I can hardly bear to listen to them. :hide:

Can't say I'm surprised, I never really listened to/watched their live stuff. I do hear a lot of his influence on Cornell's early style, but maybe it's just me.

Never really liked Ten, I thought Versus was tolerable. Went back and re-listened to Ten recently, it used to strike me as overproduced and it still does.

Green River, that record still rules.

Also, Dirt/Jar Of Flies! My mom didn't want me to listen to AIC because she said they sounded too depressing

That son of a bitch had a wife and three kids, and he went went and killed himself. At first I was sad, now I'm angry.

Oh well. In any case, I guess I'll be listening to Soundgarden all day.

No, not that. Abandoning your kids like that is pretty messed up.

You can't condemn someone struggling with clinical depression. If you're at the point of a suicide attempt your train of thought just isn't rational. He could have been thinking his family would be better off without him.

Most people who attempt suicide are struggling with mental illness. Suicide is a complication of depression. They're not in any way separate.

Green River, Credence? They were good.
Versus had a few decent songs. I like "Daughter" because my friend was blaring it on his car stereo and changed the lyrics to "don't call me (piper)". I'm still chuckling at that one over 20 years later. :teef:
I might be overreacting about Plant, but it's because I love Led Zep otherwise.

I called them drone music before I heard the term grunge. I'd say they had some very depressing lyrics. Not sure I'd want a teenager I cared for listening to that either. I like not being a parent, decisions like that are too hard!

Nope

Basically Mudhoney and Pear Jam before either of those bands existed.

I always changed it to "Don't call me Wilburrrr" because Heady Cheddar sounds like Mr. Ed

I wouldn't mind my teenager listening to it, I know that listening to depressing music doesn't make you depressed, you want to listen to depressing music because you're already depressed (not talking medical, of course).

I'm not depressed, but I love Alice in Chains anyway. It's not the lyrics that draws me in as much as how it sounds (see Nirvana). AC has good lyrics too though.
Teenagers tend to be impressionable, which is why it would be a difficult decision whether to monitor my hypothetical child's music. Today it's harder to do that than when I grew up. My parents let me listen to whatever I wanted to. I had part time jobs and could buy my own music. I listened to The Misfits at age 14, which I call serial killer music. I didn't turn out to be a serial killer thankfully.

Same night as Ian Curtis. Someone should check to see if Stroszek was playing on a local station.

Of course it's messed up; that's what depression can do to you, I've been there and I was genuinely so disturbed I thought the world would be better off without me, as well as being in some much mental pain I couldn't bear it, i just wanted it to stop.

I'm not sure anyone who hasn't been there can really understand what a hellish pit of despair living with clinical depression or anxiety can be :'(

Yeah, but listening to AIC didn't make you depressed, did it? That's more my point.

It's not the lyrics that draws me in as much as how it sounds (see Nirvana). AC has good lyrics too though.

I always liked how they sang about terrible things in such a happy way  While my parents were pretty open minded there were plenty of things I wanted to listen to that they didn't want me to. I remember having to hide Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Gwar. I'd be lying if I said they didn't leave an impression on my teenage mind, but it's not like listening to them was ever going to make me do bad things. I honestly don't see the point of trying to judge what your kid wants to listen to (unless it's total crap that is :snooty:  ), it's not like that ever dissuaded me for even a moment. If anything it increased the appeal.

There are only three types of people who really can understand it : those who are medically qualified / those who have experienced it / those who have a loved one who has experienced it. No one else

I recently told my doctor that suicide can be rational. I now know I will kill myself should the opportunity ever arise again because I know exactly how to. So here is what I mean by rational : suppose I have cancer. I have two choices : die a slow painful death or a quick painless one. A quick painless one it would obviously be. So long as one is compos mentis and can make an informed decision and with no emotion then that is a rational choice. I am also very lucky in that I have no family who would mourn my passing so I cannot feel guilty about it. Last year I overcame my fear of death. This week I overcame my fear of suicide. I feel that progress is being made. For that I must be grateful

Some other points : no amount of love can immunise anyone against mental illness. That is why those who are loved can still kill themselves so great is their pain. So suicide for them is a way of releasing the pain. And mental illness can affect anyone If you have a pulse then you can become mentally ill. Also you are not in control of your mind. Your mind is in control of you Even when you re happy. And if you dont think this is true try being happy all of the time and see how that works out for you
