FOR ALL PLEASE- Members and Beliefs We Have So Far

#1  Postby MattHunX » Mar 22, 2010 7:51 am

We have almost 1,200 members, and it would be interesting to know just how many are actually atheists, and how many are not. Just to see where we stand.

Jewish.

Why is there no "Other" option?

Too much emphasis on Xians (just lump them together. There could be another poll to split them into 10 flavours).

Wonkey's choices should be in there, as well as Agnostic, Hindu, Buddhist, Deist, Pantheist, which should cover most.

There aren't that many theists.
I'd think an "Other" option would probably serve

But, I'm unable to change it now, aren't I? At least, I think can't. :dunno:

Yeah, a restart might be a good idea - given that we have more atheists than theists, it might be better to get an idea of the differing kinds represented here - anti-theists, agnostic atheists, gnostic atheists, (whatever that phrase is that thinks the very notion of gods is so ill defined as to be impossible to take a stance on), etc, and to give just two categories for Christianity, "liberal" and "fundamentalist" (for them to choose which is nearest to their outlook).

Other categories could also be Muslim, Jewish, pagan, Buddhist & similar Eastern, and "other".
I was "jd" in RDF, and am still in Rationalia.com

"Wooberish" - a neologism for woo expressed in gibberish, spread the "meme".

I don't know very much about Christians but they could divide into those who will feed lions and those who won't?

Since many here regard atheism as being neither a "belief" nor a "worldview", the poll is likely to result in some skewed answers.

Which is why, under the section in the personal profile labelled "Belief", I put "Not Applicable". Because my view of the world doesn't rely on "belief", it relies upon evidentially supported postulates. Paying attention to reality isn't a "belief".

But wouldn't you put it in just to spite theists?

I have done a similar poll on another forum (20 choices). I lumped christianity as one religion, only splitting off Mormons as seperate citing the Book of Mormon as an extra to the bible thus with a slight difference towards traditional christian views. Whatever the choices you will always get someone who won't be happy with it. I had one who wanted catholism seperate to the rest of christians. I did point out that if you started to split just christianity and islam down to its seperate denomination/sects/cults, you would end up with a poll thousands of choices long.

Tens of thousands in fact, right? 30,000+ for Christianity alone, isn't there?

Wikipedia wrote:Belief is the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true.

What's wrong with stating "I believe in reality?" Sounds fine to me ;)

That being said I'm not happy with the personal profile label. Suggestions welcomed in "Feedback".

now that the community is detached from richard dawkins, it is likely that we will have a lot less offended theists joining the discussion to voice their disapproval about what richard has said about their beliefs, so i expect less theists in general to participate on this site
