Probably one of the nicest and most peaceful religions, as far as I can tell. I really like that Dali Llama. He's pretty laid back. They have nice temples with interesting decorations. If I was born in India one thousand years ago, I'd totally be into Buddhism. Very cool. They have all the greatest concepts. Greats words, like karma, Nirvana, atman, balaclava baklava bhavacakra... it's true. Totally great religion. The best. It's true.
6 stars

Where does Buddhism get this reputation? From when they were killing Muslims in Myanmar, or persecuting Hindus in Sri Lanka? It's like all the others. Give them a whiff of power and they start committing atrocities against those who disagree with them.

I prefer Buddhism's little cousin, Taoism. Their texts are so vague and abstract, like horoscopes. I like the underwater kung-fu that they do. Completely useless for fighting of course. Unless you get attacked by an octopus. Much symmetry and inversion in the symbolism too.

Celtic Christianity was the best. We should've kept that. At least we got some neat tattoos out of it.

Things to consider when ranking religions:

1) What is the attitude of adherents to those who are not part of that religion?

Scale:
'Oh, alright then. So, whose round is it?' .............................................. 'Die Infidel!' (Fill in the intermediate categories yourself.)

2) What is the attitude of adherents to those who were formerly part of the religion and are now no longer?

Scale:

Oh, alright then. Whose round is it? ............................ Die apostate! ( Fill in the intermediate categories yourself.)

3) What is the attitude of adherents to cultural/religious practices that are different from their own.

Scale:

Oh, I see. We do it a little differently. Whose round is it? ......................... Die unclean blasphemer! (Fill in the intermediate categories yourself.)

4) What is the attitude of adherents towards social mixing with non-adherents, intermarriage etc?

Scale:

The more the merrier. Whose round is it? ............................. Never! Don't betray blood and honour! Die you traitors! (Fill in the intermediate categories yourself.)

Anything scoring well towards the left side of these Likert scales ranks as better than anything ranking towards the right end.

I had considered a matrix with weighted scoring across various attributes. However, this seemed much too much of an endeavour as I sipped my morning coffee.

Nobody commented on Sikhism.
Someone recently said to me it is the best religion in the world.
However, I had Sikh neighbours a few years ago, and I don't want them back.
Obviously there's good and bad everywhere.

The one advantage with believing in JC is that if you have no real friends you can still have an imaginary one.
Saw this advert on the side of a bus: 'Become a Muslim and join Mohammed's family.'
Err...what do you make of that? He already had 9 wives.

Is that because they were Sikh or because of stuff that was nothing to do with them being Sikh?

Any theistic religion involves believing in imaginary friends.

If you're not a theist you can still believe in Batman.

I was going to rank all religions the same, then remembered that Janists don't strap bombs to women and children to blow up different Janists in crowded marketplaces, so now I have two ranks: Janists and The Rank Hypocrisy.

Religions all suffer from several malignant features, the most malignant of which is the inference that unsupported mythological assertions deserve to be treated as fact, simply because the mythologies in question present them. This gives birth to the other malignant features, an important one being that this inference provides an easy mechanism for the duplicitous to erect fake "justifications", for whatever misery and suffering they wish to heap upon others. The moment making shit up and demanding that it be treated as fact is considered acceptable, it isn't long before someone uses that to mendacious personal advantage.

Unfortunately, this central malaise, and its offspring, are also becoming defining features of modern politics.

As a corollary of the above, ranking religions is a largely pointless exercise, unless one considers cataloguing the scale of malign deeds emanating from a particular mythology to be something other than a taxonomic exercise.

Number One : Jainism : One of the central tenets of Jainism is non violence toward all livings things [ no exception ]
Number Two : Buddhism : Craving is the cause of all suffering therefore reducing it is necessary for spiritual growth
Number Three : Paganism : Pagans worship nature however without it [ for example the Sun ] we would all be dead

Had I to renounce my atheism in favour of a belief system I would in all probability choose one of these
And it would probably be Paganism as I do not think I possess the moral fibre required for the other two

I am not vegetarian and think killing in self defence is morally justifiable so that would rule out Jainism
I have certain cravings which I either can not or do not want to control so that would rule out Buddhism

I'm thinking of becoming a self-defence vegetarian. Any animal that tries to attack me is fair game and edible. This would mean having to breed more aggressive livestock, however.
