So what? Neither Marlowe nor Goethe wrote plays about Doctor Zerknitternus. The tragic deal Doctor Faustus made with Mephistopheles, on the other hand, is legendary.

Actually, it does. The data it records are used to discover what and how something went wrong. The knowledge gained from it helps avoid a recurrence.

The problem with thought experiments is that they ideally require thought. Auf, when you feel like putting the effort into figuring out the parameters of the OP so that something worthwhile can be said about it, let me know. Even an enticing mystery needs a framework.

This is a pretty easy question. I'm just a layperson when it comes to souls and devils, but the way I understand it, if the devil gets my soul, I'll be on fire for the rest of eternity. That's kind of a long time to suffer, in exchange for a few decades of fun. So I wouldn't sell my soul to the devil for any price. It would never be enough to justify burning for all eternity.

On the other hand, I'm likely to burn for eternity anyway (probably for being a godless heathen, but if not, then certainly for wearing garments made of mixed fibres), so might as well make some extra cash as a side-hustle. Not sure it would be worth the devil's while to offer too much for my soul, though; he'll get it soon enough.

I'm imagining if the Devil is outright buying your soul, then they're getting something a bit extra. Like if you go to Hell when you die you're just on loan until Daddy Asshole thinks you've had enough. But if you sell your soul, well, good luck getting out of that one. Hopefully you've been practicing your fiddle.

How do we know Hell is bad? Because the religious assholes say it is? Pretty much everything else they tell us is utter bullshit, why believe them about Hell? I bet it's great. Pretty much all my mates will be there, in fact, the only people I know who won't are people I can't stand anyway. I say give it a shot, can't be worse than an eternity sucking God cock.

Many Christian theologians have reinterpreted hell. It is no longer fire and brimstone, the gnashing of teeth and all that. Now hell is - so they say - "an absence of God". You make a good point just the same. Who wants to sit next to the throne of god, singing songs of praise to him for all eternity? He is, after all, "arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." Yuch. You'd have to be an extraordinarily hypocritical or deluded person to be able to stand it.

Theologians may object to this description of the ogre. They might say something like: "Yeah that was the God of the Old Testament. We now have a New Covenant. God has changed. He has become all lovey-dovey." They might say that while busily sweeping Matthew 5:17 under the carpet: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or. the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." They also forget to explain why the Old Testament is still part of the Bible on every Christian church's pulpit. That is a bit weird if the New Covenant has superseded it.

For a few dollars more plane could have a airbag arrangement and parachute. Ironic.

Airbags do not help survival when an aeroplane hits the ground at a 100 miles per hour or more, and I'd like to see how 150 to 400 untrained passengers can simultaneously and successfully parachute out of a crashing one either.

Reducing the chance of future crashes is preferable to harebrained schemes aimed at surviving them. Black boxes are effective in achieving the former.

Save the pilots cabin to begin with, and as the technology develops move onto passengers.

If you want to be taken seriously on aviation safety issues (which I seriously doubt) a good start would be to use the same vocabulary aviation experts use when discussing various parts of the aircraft. For example, in the media, the flight attendants are referred to as "cabin crew" because that's where they work. Pilots are referred to as "cockpit crew". That is how aviation safety reports refer to them, also.

But anyway, back to the ostensible topic: Having a chat about "selling your soul" is roughly on a par with having a chat about the kind of conversation you would have with your cat if it fluently spoke your native language. Knock yourself out. Please.

I'm not sure. Was in the air cadets, but you forget so much when your out that loop. Still like planes though, figure saving the pilot would be like having a rocket abort feature and use retros and things. Easier than saving everyone, justified from the black box recorder perspective, and get people with creative genius focussed on the larger issue of saving the passengers.
