Although I'm not American, this article caught my attention.
It started with this
Scientific news is a subject of growing concern in the United States. It seems like every scientific finding or report is met with disbelief, skepticism, and the anger people that just don’t want to believe in facts. What has happened in America that has put science at an all-time low? Are we headed for a society where opinion matters more than fact, or are Americans just not getting the information they need?
Although the article discusses other issues that are important, the bit about skepticism bugs me.
Why do they consider skepticism towards science findings/ reports to be ... unscientific?
The article complains that every scientific finding or report is met with skepticism, as if skepticism is supposed to be bad?
But as scientists, aren't we meant to be skeptical?
I think skepticism is very important for scientists.
I remember that many many years ago, when I first enrolled in my biology degree, my professor gave us a lecture about the importance of skepticism-- without skepticism, how do we find new things? How does science move forwards?
Science is volatile.
