I once thought teachers were all of a certain educational standard. Then I roomed with some trainees at uni. I'm hoping that one just got muddled.

I had a science teacher once who told the class Meteorology was the study of meteors.

I guess the problem there is that English doesn't really have any consistent rule for when a compound phrase should have dashes or not. And since the examples in actual use don't seem to follow really obvious patterns, when the speakers try to figure out the rules by analogy from the material available to them it gets inconsistent and haphazard.

Come on, context. Was it an English teacher ("the sun moved majestically around us in the sky") or a physics teacher ("I hereby resign")?

My daughter was at primary school at the time, they don't have different teachers for different subjects.
