First Penis Transplantee Becomes Father

A South African man who had the world’s first successful penis transplant is to become a father less than a year after the breakthrough surgery.

Prof André van der Merwe, who led the operating team, announced that the 21-year-old’s girlfriend was pregnant. “He’s definitely smiling big,” the urologist, based at Stellenbosch University, said on Friday. “He’s proud. He’s also a little bit shy.”

The man’s partner was four months pregnant so the baby could be expected in November, Van der Merwe added. It is not yet known whether it will be a boy or a girl. The man’s mother and sisters have been informed.

The man’s penis was amputated three years ago after life-threatening complications arising from a botched circumcision. His penis had developed gangrene. He was 18 and sexually active at the time.

Perhaps more importantly, avoid circumcision! The health risks outweigh the health advantages.

If he doesn't, the mother might try to force it by getting a judge to order a circumcision.

I find myself wondering how much physical sensation is there. Transplanting and connecting vessels is one thing, but actually connecting nerves?

Well, yeah. But he had to reach an orgasmic state to ejaculate, so there must be some 'feeling' there. That's one hell of an operation if they succeeded in that area.

That very likely is how he got his ladyfriend pregnant. The transplanted penis probably just serves his self-image, which is important too.

His new dick would have been hooked up really basically: two arteries, two veins plus his urethra. He wouldn't feel anything in the transplanted tissue. He would have to stimulate tissues he's already got to achieve orgasm, same as guys who have penectomies but dont get transplants.

Yes. But the reporting implies (and it only seems to be an implication until there is more info.), that everything is functioning 'normally'.

Which I highly doubt is the case. I'm sure he can get boners and ejaculate but I doubt he can feel a damn thing in his new dick. He probably relies on stimulation of other bits to get hard and cum, which he could have done before the transplant. If he knocked up his girlfriend via traditional means, that's great. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't tho.
