Jeff Buckley. I could wax on for hours about Jeff. I know his music quite intimately, I learnt pretty much the entire Grace album off by heart. The guitar isn't stupidly difficult, but in combination with the vocal parts it's not a walk in the park. The way he sang absolutely effortlessly, and seamlessly switched between vocal registers was a wonder.
Nick Drake. Really he could indulge in some pretty dreadful 70s whimsy, but when he was on form it was astonishing. Practically unknown in his time it was only because his deal stipulated that his albums should never be out of print allowed a slow posthumous reputation to grow. I remember an ex-girlfriend of mine discovering Nick through my CD collection and phoning me up really excited and insisting we must go an see him live, only for me to tell her she was 25 years too late.
In the not actually dead, but not able to play category, Jason Becker. I know shred guitar is about as popular as bowel surgery, but for my money Becker could have been one of the absolute greats in that field. He was diagnosed ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease whilst still in his early 20s. He's still composing music, I think there's an album due out with other guitarists playing which he composed using an eye-tracker.
