Swiss suicide clinic Dignitas probed after 'patient suffering from paranoid schizophrenia was given suicide kit

Swiss suicide clinic Dignitas is under investigation over claims that it ignored a patient's distressed mental condition to give him drugs to end his own life.

Strict assisted suicide laws in Switzerland state that each patient must be of sound mind and able to understand the consequences of their actions.

But now details have emerged of a patient who was allegedly given a DIY suicide kit prescribed by a Zurich gynaeologist despite suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

Wait they don't specify the nature of the mentally ill guy and the clinic? Did he GO to the clinic? Did he ASK for the stuff? And was given a 'kit'. What's a 'kit'? A do-it-yourself kit?

Personally, I don't buy the 'mentally-ill don't know they will die' as justification of REFUSING care if they request it.

The suicide tourist even less so an important issue.

So I'm really not getting the issue (other than not nationalizing the clinic and running it as a service-for-loss to minimize corrupt practices).

Well if the mentally ill are OK why not make it available to all, including children?

My experience with the Daily Mail indicate that the most likely story is that a Swedish banker was visiting a walk-in clinic and received a brochure on nationalized medicine, when an intrepid Daily Mail reporter happened to be 8 pints in at his local pub.

The resulting story is what you see here. Some names and details may have been changed to protect the people involved from appearing in a Daily Mail story.

Poor analogy. There could simply be a cut-off age (eg old enough to leave home age), or better yet, requirement that one must be suffering a debilitating affliction as certified by a doctor that prevents them from functioning, regardless of age.
