Government can supply drugs and the research around it. We could be paying more into research as well and making health one of the main pillars of gov't - one that sees only serious contemplation on how to make it work better with no access for making a profit.
I'm broadly in agreement with all of this but, as per my earlier devils advocate comments about healthcare professional profiting, the creep of socialisation is inevitably going to butt heads with companies wanting to make a profit from what they provide and looking at what the private sector generates for itself by way of profit. I think that there is a point where the ability of Government funding for services bleeds off and no longer provides an adequate buffer from the competitiveness of the private sector. Unless you go down the route of everything being controlled by the state, which is an idea that is still a very tough sell in our world of late stage capitalism.
