'Beautiful Mind' mathematician John Nash killed

US mathematician John Nash, whose life story was turned into the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind, has died in a car crash, local media has reported.

Nash, 86, and his wife Alicia were both killed when their taxi crashed in New Jersey, the reports said.

The mathematician is renowned for his work in game theory, winning the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994.

His breakthroughs in maths - and his struggles with schizophrenia - were the focus of the film.

Russell Crowe, who played him in the film, tweeted: "Stunned... My heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts."

Terrible. :(
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

:( sad day!
The Bible is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies.

If the movie was close to reality it was one relationship they had.

What's especially sad is that they died in a completely random and unexpected manner.....in a taxi car crash....

Their son has both the same mathematical mind and the same schizophrenia....

Indeed. A disproportionate number of my favorite old people seem to die in accidents rather than from the normal chronic diseases.

I'm also kind of sad that he seems to be remembered mostly as the subject of a movie, with limited coverage of his discovery of Nash equilibrium.

It seems they were flung from the vehicle as they weren't wearing seatbelts. I guess it goes to show that all the intelligence in the world means little if it isn't accompanied by common sense. What an unnecessary loss.

A lot of taxis in the U.S. don't even have seat belts - that is, they've disappeared between the seat cushions and are irretrievable.

I read this headline yesterday on a movie set and spent the rest of my day in just enough daze to be disconnected from it. Nash was an inspiration to me, despite how flawed he was as a person. I was a bit upset that A Beautiful Mind didn't cover the birth of his first son and how he abandoned -- and for many years refused to acknowledge -- his family.
