Republican Watch

People who say "Democrats are as bad as Republicans" are almost as bad as Republicans.

Leaked documents show that the Supreme Court is about to strike down Roe v Wade - sorry to all the Americans who are about to wake up in a theocracy.

Don't get mad, get even!

You non-theocratic USAians have got to get your shit together or you're going to keep getting spanked by reactionary forces. The 'pro-life' campaign (plural, really) is much better organized, has much more visibility, and has the emotional gut punch argument. It's working. There needs to be an evidence-based, liberty-focused, reasoned and reasonable campaign to remind voters what they're losing when they give up these freedoms. It should be SO easy in the USA to tap into all that small government ideology to present this as over-reach, as interference in essential liberties, and to do so in a way that repeatedly compares the position of the USA limiting freedom of women to control their own reproductive organs to impoverished, theocratic nations known for their terrible human rights record doing the same.

Really, it's time to get busy!

Even Thailand managed it last year, finally lifting the near complete ban on abortions (except health and rape) to allow for 1st trimester termination. The 'developing world' can't really be called that if the 'developed world' keeps making an antiquated arse of itself.

Too many of our leaders are monsters.

It has ever been thus, but these days, with the onset of mass communications technology, more of them are being exposed as such.

The question is, how far are people prepared to tolerate this?

I'd submit that after the pussy grabbing porn star shagging traitor Trump the bar is pretty fucking low - Cawthorn's antics are small beer by comparison.

Perhaps if some of the structural advantages the RepFucks have, the electoral college and the senate, could be fixed there be less minority rule going.
Dumb question, why even have an electoral college, don't most democracies elsewhere just count the votes? If so why isn't that done in the US?

The Republicans aren't going to let the Dems get rid of the EC or fix the Senate because the EC and Senate are good for Republicans.

There have been efforts to get rid of the EC in past, but they've come up short, as it is a ridiculous high bar to get over (two thirds of House/Senate to make the change, and two thirds of states to ratify). There's no way in hell you'd even get one Republican to support the end of the EC in this highly polarized MAGA era.

As for the Senate, I doubt you could even get most Dems to make changes to the Senate. Too many are too comfortable with the status quo. The Senate imbalance is barely part of the national political conversation. Politics nerds know it's fucked up, but most people don't know jack shit about it.

The thing about MTG is that she's completely oblivious to the effects of her actions and statements and how they are perceived by others. It's indicative of some kind of issue over which she's actually got no control. For someone to so completely lack the cursors that would tell anyone else "that would not be a good idea" looks very much to be one of the symptoms of an actual mental condition where the sufferer has little or no impulse control and has a very twisted sense of empathy with others.

It's not so much that she is the way she is (she's got no control over it), but that the Republican leadership and electorate have put her where she is rather than somewhere where she can get help.

It looks like he's gone: Madison Cawthorn: Republicans oust Trump-backed Gen Z congressman (BBC)

Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing since he was such an embarrassment to the Party of Gilead.

I'm happy he lost, but his replacement is likely to be better at wrecking shit than he was, since he didn't seem to do anything except embarrass the fuck out of himself. Now by the law of averages, we'll probably have someone more intelligent, therefore potentially more destructive legislating-wise.

The Secret Papers of Lee Atwater, Who Invented the Scurrilous Tactics That Trump Normalized

An infamous Republican political operative’s unpublished memoir shows how the Party came to embrace lies, racial fearmongering, and winning at any cost.

It’s a Washington axiom that when a power player dies, their influence and secrets do as well. One night this spring, my phone chimed with a text message that showed otherwise. Sally Atwater, the widow of the legendary Republican political operative Lee Atwater, had died. She had been married to the bad boy of the G.O.P. during the Reagan and Bush years until his untimely death, thirty years ago. The Atwaters’ eldest daughter, Sara Lee, who lives in Brussels and is a Democrat, invited me over to her parents’ home to read through cartons of papers from her late father, whom I knew well when I covered the Reagan White House. They included seven chapters of Lee Atwater’s unpublished draft memoir, which had remained untouched since he succumbed to brain cancer, in 1991, at the age of forty, and at the height of his political career.

[...]

Atwater died before he could finish his memoir. What remains of it are hunks of yellowing typewritten pages, held together by rusting staples and paper clips. But the seven surviving chapters suggest that, far from dying along with him, the nihilism, cynicism, and scurrilous tactics that Atwater brought into national politics live on. In many ways, his memoir suggests that Atwater’s tactics were a bridge between the old Republican Party of the Nixon era, when dirty tricks were considered a scandal, and the new Republican Party of Donald Trump, in which lies, racial fearmongering, and winning at any cost have become normalized. Chapter 5 of Atwater’s memoir in particular serves as a Trumpian precursor. In it, Atwater, who worked in the Office of Political Affairs in the Reagan White House, and managed George H. W. Bush’s 1988 Presidential campaign before becoming the Republican Party’s chairman at the age of thirty-seven, admits outright that he only cared about winning, not governing. “I’ve always thought running for office is a bunch of bullshit. Being in a office is even more bullshit. It really is bullshit,” he wrote. “I’m proud of the fact that I understand how much BS it is.”

In short, Atwater cared nothing for good governance or competent administration. Instead, he was one of those slimy life forms who cared purely for power, and didn't care what was done with that power, or whose lives were ruined by its misuse.

Unlike many Gilead local parties the Texas Republican convention has laid out what they actually stand for. In a way I suppose they should be applauded for stepping up and stating what they really want to impose on the population. I can only hope the population wake up and realise what a theocratic hell-hole they are intent on turning Texas into.

Texas Republican Convention calls Biden win illegitimate and rebukes Cornyn over gun talks - The headline doesn't cover the full fruitloop nuttiness of the positions taken which include:

Requiring Texas students “to learn about the humanity of the preborn child,” including teaching that life begins at fertilization and requiring students to listen to live ultrasounds of gestating fetuses.

Amending the Texas Constitution to remove the Legislature’s power “to regulate the wearing of arms, with a view to prevent crime.”

Treating homosexuality as “an abnormal lifestyle choice,” language that was not included in the 2018 or 2020 party platforms.

Deeming gender identity disorder “a genuine and extremely rare mental health condition,” requiring official documents to adhere to “biological gender,” and allowing civil penalties and monetary compensation to “de-transitioners” who have received gender-affirming surgery, which the platform calls a form of medical malpractice.

Changing the U.S. Constitution to cement the number of Supreme Court justices at nine and repeal the 16th Amendment of 1913, which created the federal income tax.

Ensuring “freedom to travel” by opposing Biden’s Clean Energy Plan and “California-style, anti-driver policies,” including efforts to turn traffic lanes over for use by pedestrians, cyclists and mass transit.

Declaring “all businesses and jobs as essential and a fundamental right,” a response to COVID-19 mandates by Texas cities that required customers to wear masks and limited business hours.

Abolishing the Federal Reserve, the nation’s central bank, and guaranteeing the right to use alternatives to cash, including cryptocurrencies.

There's also stuff about making Christianity the official religion, although not quite so blatant since even the most brainwashed realise this explicitly breaks the constitution which they still nominally adhere to (although you've got to wonder why they haven't got around to issuing an "official revised and interpreted constitution" like they do with most religious documents).

As I said earlier - I'm torn between despairing of the adoption of a completely openly fascist agenda and applauding the exposure and open espousal of ethics and a political position which are the complete antithesis of the basis on which the country was founded.

Here's to hoping the brain-washed horde realise what they are getting into by voting Gilead, although I'm not feeling optimistic.

What the actual flying fuck....

Nacht der langen Messr anyone?

Facebook has taken the ad down.
It's still on Twitter and Youtube but is likely to be taken down at some point.

It's worth noting that the Senatorial candidate and ex-governor:

Greitens resigned from his governorship after a woman accused him of tying her up, photographing her, sexually assaulting her, and then blackmailing her, and the Missouri legislature agreed that Greitens had engaged in “multiple acts constituting crimes, misconduct, and acts of moral turpitude.” When Greitens’s ex-wife accused him of abusing her and their children, Greitens claimed the accusations were egged on by “the RINO swamp.”
