Republican Watch

People who say "Democrats are as bad as Republicans" are almost as bad as Republicans.

For discussion of politics, and what's going on in the world today.

The National Republican Congressional Committee released an ad Friday labeling Antonio Delgado, the Democratic candidate for New York’s 19th Congressional District, a “big city rapper.”

To be fair, the guy was a rapper at one point, but he is also Harvard Law graduate and a Rhodes Scholar.

If that was me running the Dem campaign, I'd simply say "OK, the gloves are now off" and start carpet bombing the airwaves with embarrassing Republican career choices. I'm sure there's some out there whose past includes a stint in the "adult entertainment" industry, for example ...

Captain Shouty McTomatoface appears to be under investigation for campaign finance violations;

http://dctribune.org/senator-lindsey-gr ... to-russia/

Most RepThugs are hypocrites of the worst order but his headsnap turnaround on Trump is notable.

What could those “sketchy things” have been? Well, no one here at DC Tribune has contacts inside the Democratic Coalition, but I’ve done plenty of analysis myself if you’ve been following me here, and the first example of a place to look would be at the $800,000 that Graham’s political action committee took from Len Blavatnik, a citizen of the US and UK who emigrated from the USSR in the 1970s with his family and returned to Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Blavatnik is the business partner of Viktor Vekselberg in Rusal, the world’s second-largest aluminum manufacturer, which was founded by Oleg Deripaska. Do those names sound familiar? They should by now. Vekselberg is the Russian billionaire who was discovered in May to have been funneling secret payments to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen through the same shell company that Cohen set up to disburse payments to Trump’s mistresses, Essential Consultants. Deripaska is the Putin ally who worked with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to lobby the United States in efforts that would benefit Putin’s Kremlin. Toward the middle of Manafort’s first trial, it was discovered that Deripaska had loaned him ten million dollars in an unsecured contract.

Those names are familiar to me for sure.
I personally strongly suspect Rat-faced git aka Nunes is similarly compromised and would be looking at other sycophants too.

Yeah. That was over a lawn dispute, but the guy also happened to be a Democrat which is handy for confirmation bias purposes.

How are these muppets senators?

Tom Cotton's Kavanaugh conspiracy

All joking aside, Cotton’s connect-the-dots conspiracy theory isn’t just silly, it’s based on a foundation of factual errors. The Washington Post explained overnight:

We decided to fact-check Cotton because U.S. senators should get the facts straight before trotting out incendiary accusations.

Not a whiff of evidence shows that McLean conspired with Bharara or Schumer or both to leak details about Ford’s letter. Contrary to what Cotton said, McLean never worked for Bharara. McLean left the FBI’s New York field office in 2009; Bharara was U.S. attorney from 2009 to 2017. Bharara and McLean both say they don’t know each other.

Must be nice to be able to sleep in your own bed. Has Blasey Ford been able to return home or are the murder threats still coming hard and fast?

You mean she's only received murder threats?

Only given what I've seen of the Trumpoids in action, I'd have expected rape and torture threats as well ...

Voting rights become a flashpoint in Georgia governor’s race
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/voting-rights-become-a-flashpoint-in-georgia-governors-race/2018/10/09/86b41c4e-cbd1-11e8-ad0a-0e01efba3cc1_story.html

ATLANTA — Marsha Appling-Nunez was showing the college students she teaches how to check online if they’re registered to vote when she made a troubling discovery. Despite being an active Georgia voter who had cast ballots in recent elections, she was no longer registered.

“I was kind of shocked,” said Appling-Nunez, who moved from one Atlanta suburb to another in May and believed she had successfully changed her address on the voter rolls.

“I’ve always voted. I try to not miss any elections, including local ones,” Appling-Nunez said.

She tried re-registering, but with about one month left before a November election that will decide a governor’s race and some competitive U.S. House races, Appling-Nunez’s application is one of over 53,000 sitting on hold with Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office. And unlike Appling-Nunez, many people on that list — which is predominantly black, according to an analysis by The Associated Press — may not even know their voter registration has been held up.

Tuesday is Georgia’s deadline to register and be eligible to vote in the November General Election.

Kemp, who’s also the Republican candidate for governor, is in charge of elections and voter registration in Georgia.

His Democratic opponent, former state Rep. Stacey Abrams, and voting rights advocacy groups charge that Kemp is systematically using his office to suppress votes and tilt the election, and that his policies disproportionately affect black and minority voters.

It's a property of floating ice. That's why ponds and rivers freeze top down instead of bottom up (which is great news for freshwater fish).

Not much use for ice that's sitting on a continent.

Not sure about that. Melting sea ice is not a cause of rising sea levels because ice is indeed less dense than water at the same temperature.

Sea levels are rising because of melting land ice, and thermal expansion of seas that are already above 4 degrees centigrade.
