Republican Dennis Hof, a Nevada brothel owner and former reality TV star who died last month, was elected Tuesday to a legislative seat representing a rural southern portion of the state, according to The Associated Press.

Hof was elected to the Assembly District 36, beating Democratic challenger Lesia Romanov, an educator.

They chose a dead pimp over an educator with two master's degrees. America in a nutshell.

I was reading a story on the shooting earlier today and it mentioned that it was the largest shooting since... 9 months ago. But it only just barely edged out the shooting a couple of weeks ago. It's like reading a recap of a sporting event at this point.

I've heard, so it might not be true, that the dotard's first (at least very early) action was to remove some restrictions on gun ownership related to mental health.

If so, what would it take to revoke that restriction change? Another Presidential decree, a doctor's note showing how it was a plain stupid idea or something other?

I think it was a law that was passed and signed by Obama but still was under some sort of review period and he killed it.

That said, I'm not a big fan of broadly restricting gun ownership (aka a civil right in the US) based on mental health as it unfairly stereotypes the mentally ill as violent which is simply untrue. Much better would be a law which targets violent people regardless of their mental health. But that's probably getting a bit off topic.

Back to Trump and the GOP, while I may in principle agree with not limiting the rights of the mentally ill it's completely hypocritical and shows them to be completely dishonest when they constantly blame gun violence on mental illness but then are against laws that try to fix what they themselves claim the problem is. It's a case of being right for the wrong reasons.

Optics and stereotypes aside, this bill was to restrict people who have been determined to be so incapacitated they need a guardian to manage their finances from purchasing or owning guns. Much like letting a 12 year old or 8 year old buy a gun.

This kid survived the Vegas shooting only to be killed in the Thousand Oaks shooting.

That's not unreasonable. I must have been thinking of other legislation which would have prevented anybody who'd previously been committed from owning firearms.
