Five people were killed after gunmen opened fire in a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers, the mosque's president told reporters on Sunday.

A witness told Reuters that up to three gunmen fired on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.

"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui.

Quebec police on the scene said there had been fatalities and that two people had been arrested.

"There are many victims ... there are deaths," a Quebec police‎ spokesman told reporters.

A witness said a heavily armed police tactical squad was seen entering the mosque. Police spokesman Etienne Doyon declined to say whether there was still a gunman inside the mosque.

Police later tweeted: "The situation is under control."

Three gunmen opened fire in a mosque in Quebec City during evening prayers on Sunday, reportedly killing at least five people, according to the mosque’s president, Mohamed Yangui. Around 40 people were reportedly inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Center (Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec) when the gunmen opened fire.

Police say they arrested two people and aren't ruling out the possibility of a third person being involved. Officials confirmed there were multiple fatalities but won’t specify how many. “The investigation has not ended,” a police spokesman said. “We will be trying to verify if there is a third or fourth or any other person involved. We’re not ruling out that there may be other suspects.”

This Mosque was target of previous incidents too.

The "far-right" has been gaining traction in Quebec the last few years. Nothing like what you see in USA but enough to talk about it. There are groups 'patrolling' the streets and their reason for existing is 'fear of radical Islam and globalization'.

I feel sad this is happening in my country. Multiculturalism and protecting others is really an integral part of our identity, at least my generation.

We even have our own Trump rising up. "Kevin O'Leary" Not as insane, probably not as retarded but just as scary IMO.

EDIT: Interestingly the Premier dodged questions on the ethnicity of those arrested. Makes me feel like they were Arab/First gen?

There's unconfirmed local reports saying one was Arab one was Quebecois.

He does bear some similarities to Trump, in that he is a businessman best known as an outspoken TV personality. But AFAIK he has never made any statements about ethnic screening and the like. And in important ways he is directly opposed, ideologically to Trump. e.g. He strongly favors free trade.

A closer analogy to Trump might be Kellie Leitch, who has made ethnic screening the cornerstone of her campaign.

The suspects in a mosque shooting that left six dead and five critically injured in Quebec City have been identified as Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed el Khadir.

Obviously this is very scanty information, but I'm struggling to figure out the ideological motivation that would unite two guys with those names to shoot up a mosque.

Latest report is that only one of the two men in custody is a suspect. The other is being called a "witness". The names are no longer being reported as a result.

I'm still as confused, but now about different things.
