Turkish TV pundit claimed Shakespeare was actually

Turkish TV pundit claimed Shakespeare was actually “Sheikh Pir”

Self claimed Turkish historian Kadir Mısırlıoğlu has made a very challenging claim on Shakespeare yesterday (July 3) on a Turkish TV broadcaster. He said that “Shakespeare was not English and his original name is ‘Sheikh Pir’. Even more, he was a secret Muslim. “Sheikh” means Islamic scholar, while Mısırlıoğlu explains “pir” stands for “old, elderly”.

Mısırlıoğlu is appearing on a TV program during Ramadan month on Beyaz TV.

Mısırlıoğlu’s statements went viral in the social media, many have made joyful and a little bit angry sharings.

Mısırlıoğlu attended into politics in 1977 through National Salvation Party (MSP), which is regarded as the first Islamist party in Turkey. Following 1980 military coup in Turkey, he left Turkey and returned back in 1991. Mısırlıoğlu currently regarded as a Neo-Ottomanist figure out of politics.

In late 1970s Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was also pursuing an active political life in the same party (MSP). Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is also a descendant of the same political tradition which was pioneered by Necmettin Erbakan.

Years ago it is known that Libya’s overturned leader Mummer Gaddafi also claimed Shakespare was actually Sheikh Zubair.

It reminds me of the Louis Theroux documentary where he visits the black Israelites group and they basically try to claim that anyone in history who did anything good was black, including Shakespeare, Mozart and Beethoven.

I suppose we should expect these things. After all, if you're going to deny reality enough to believe in a literal interpretation of a religious text, why stop there?

It's such a self-hating action though. It's basically claiming that you have no great writers that can compare to Shakespeare, so you have to look outside your own culture to find someone worth claiming. Instead, he could use his platform to promote a great Turkish writer to the world.

Unless he really thinks that Shakespeare is a great Turkish writer...

Shakespeare is best read in the original Klingon
