2011: What a year in games!

#1  Postby Varangian » Dec 08, 2011 10:14 pm

Looking back on 2011, it must be one of the best years in games in a goodly while. Portal 2, Crysis 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution... I'm sure you have your own favourites - please add to the list!

You already all know what I'm going to say and if you don't, like Johnny Depp's last movie, you haven't been paying attention to me.

Hands down.

This is one of the most exciting games I played in ages. Pee was never far from the tip of my penis. All around were hoards of the living dead, beasts, giants and dragons ready to stomp on me like a Justin Bieber CD given as a Christmas present if I so much as scratched the rim of my nostril.
The combat system was almost flawless. Every enemy, Catholic-church dangerous. Sudden traps and pitfalls mocked your mangled corpse. All designed to whittle your perseverance, erode your patience and fray your sanity.

The only disappointment was how many overlooked this in favour of Skyrim.

It's ok. I understand. Some of us sip on a couple of Corr's Light and go home. Others lash the poitin into them and come around a week later minus a liver. I get it. There's no shame in it.

Just to avoid confusion, I ran out of word space above, the Skyrim are the Corr's Light drinkers.

DAII sucked dragon-sized balls compared to DA:O. Portal 2 was cool. LA Noir was supposed to be good. Halo Anniversary Edition came out in November. As long as it's exactly the same as the first one in every way except being able to be played on a 360, I will like that. DX:HR was good as well.

Okay, I'm out. Next thing on my to buy list is Mass Effect 3. Unfortunately, it will be around next October/November by the time I actually get to play it.

My GOTY will have to be either Skyrim or Saints Row 3. The latter has its flaws (it's no Saints Row 2), but it is a game where I can join my friend whenever I want and surf on his pimped out garbage truck whilst wearing a bathrobe and mind-controlling hookers with pseudo-Japanese gameshow octopuses. Oh and it has jet bikes. JET. BIKES. WITH MINIGUNS.

Other games I enjoyed this year include Deus Ex HR, Portal 2, Battlefield 3, Minecraft, Gears of War 3 and F1 2011. Assassin's Creed: Revelations is next on my list, and I would very much like to get the Witcher 2 at some point.

Skyrim, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Pokemon Black/White (not as good as the previous ones, but decent), Okamiden... In two days, Monster Hunter Tri G comes out, but only in Japan so far. *sadness* Minecraft technically came out in 2011 too.

My budget's a little tighter than I'd like, so the big title games I played this year are a few years old. That said, this has been a great year for indie games. In no particular order:

Bastion, Frozen Synapse, Terraria, A Valley Without Wind, Dungeons of Dredmore, and Lost Labyrinth had some transformative updates.

eta: For my money, Terraria after the 1.1 patch is the indie GOTY, but when A Valley Without Wind gets out of public beta, it's going to be awesome.

True about Dark Souls?

Super true about Dark Souls. I died in the tutorial level. Then at a rate of...about every 15 minutes after that.

I thought Dark Souls was only for PS3? I'm seriously out of the loop.

It's for PS3 and XBox. No PC, though.

The first one, Demon's Souls was PS3 only, that might be where the confusion lies.

Yes, that will be it. Think I'll buy it, I've been wanting an RPG I can really get my teeth into since I finished Dragon Age for the umpteenth time.

Do I have the patience as I did when I was a kid? I will find out with this game. :smoke:

I really don't think Dark Souls should be rated against Skyrim, since Dark Souls really isn't an RPG. It is more of a hack'n slash dungeon delver action game. I finished the thing and its story is on par with "Are you badass enough to save the president" from the NES days.

Seriously, there is about 3-4 minutes of story development in the whole game.

Really, the game isn't that hard, I beat Gwyn on the first try... (the other bosses not so much)
