This seems to be simply a reaction to much US TV sentimentality, a result of the market forces in play there rather than some inherent tendency in US people. In contrast, we seem in the UK at present to be drowning in an extreme excess of cynicism masquerading as simply "getting" irony.

That was my first reaction on reading this thread, and Maude, and the Golden Girls, absolutely brilliant sarcasm, my favourite kind of humour. I hate slapstick, pie-in-the-face kind of humour, and I hate those silly sitcoms about people on the dole, Litte Britain, I think it's called.? Two and a half men, is another example of great humour.

Was that irony? :dunno:

I just don't get it.

Golden Girls was good.
What's the dole, the toilet?

Why isn't rain on your wedding day ironic? Especially being sung by a young woman. Some plan their weddings before they even meet their husbands. :D

It's the free handout from the government when you can't get a job. The sitcom I'm thinking about was one episode I saw about a family who work the system to live really well. I didn't think it was funny, the rest of the people watching told me I don't have a sense of humour. I still don't see what's funny about it, but Frasier, I get.

That proves they don't get irony because I don't see how a windmill on fire is ironic.

The irony is that wind stations are supposed to be 'green' and one on fire...

That's pretty poor

This on the other hand is how irony is done.

Americans don't get irony? Ironic, isn't it? Oh, you don't know ...

I'm irritated that Americans also don't get that South Africa is not the same as Saudi Arabia, not even CNN gets that.

That will be because of all the sand dunes and the camels and the wearing of the towels on your heads...
