That's excellently drawn... a fitting tribute to ROTJ!

I have a great fondness for the original trilogy Star Wars movies. What impresses me most is the level of artistry and craftsmanship that went into the special visual effects of that pre-digital era... the miniatures (models), the matte paintings, sculpting of the creatures, animation FX, etc.

If you've got an hour to spare, you might like this 1984 documentary featuring the work done by Industrial Light & Magic on Star Wars, Indiana Jones and other movies of that time...

The segment on matte paintings is especially interesting, IMO. Click here if you'd like to skip straight to that point in the video.

I'll take a look. The whole movie industry by 1980 is something I'm pretty jealous of. They seem to be at the level of Renaissance painters, in the matte backgrounds and the posters themselves. There is a Drew Struzan book on my Amazon wishlist. I know my art is a sort of Basquiet simple, but it's a reason I want to use real materials: I could make something way more professional with computer tools, but the heart of it needs to be real. One thing I like about these pages is that I didn't eve scan them! I photographed them on my iPhone! From here on in, pencils need to be photographed, not scanned. I can't even imagine a matte artist's process. Too deep for me.

Agreed! I much prefer the look of traditional media to that of digital. Some of my favorite comics are the British ones of the '70s and '80s. Among the ace artist-illustrators of the time were Ian Kennedy and Don Lawrence, both of whom created splendid fantasy worlds without computers... just pencils, brush and watercolours (transparent and/or opaque gouache)...

Don Lawrence...

Drew a character that is a literal and figurative dickhead on MS Paint. NSFW Kind of immature hehe.

Very nice. Like the glow effects, which work very well with the cast shadows.

I decided the rose needed some more work, so here's the final version

Superb.
Can see you put a lot of effort into drawing the scenery... and I like the fact that the backgrounds are slightly grayed out (atmospheric perspective) to enhance the depth.

Thanks! The backgrounds are pencil, and I photographed it instead of scanning to keep the texture deep  Just trying new techniques.

Some fractal mutations with Apophysis 2.0 from a few months ago.

I kept mutating the image until I saw something in them.

I am seriously addicted to Space Engine. I came across this planet at the exact moment it was going through a colossal eclipse with her sister planet almost of the same size.
