Great lines in songs?

#1  Postby j.mills » Apr 07, 2010 11:24 pm

A couple of my faves:

Joni Mitchell wrote:By the time we got to Woodstock we were half a million strong.

Metrically perfect, the spirit of a hopeful decade in a few words.

Paul Simon (in Graceland) wrote:The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar.

An immediate and compelling visual image for the Great Big Muddy under sunshine, the National being the shiniest of all guitars:

But also, if you want them, there are other levels. As home of Delta Blues, the Mississippi can be thought of as 'the national guitar', the source of its music, in the same way that the Great Plains are 'the national bread-basket'. Also, the Delta is the wide spreading area at the end of the river's long 'neck', so it's (loosely) a topographic guitar slung from the nation's shoulders.

And a simpler one:

Bob Seger wrote:Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.

There is grandeur in this view of life
Where one becomes many through struggle and strife,
But the Mother of Mysteries is another man's call:
Why is there something 'stead of nothing at all?

"Send lawyers, guns and money. The shit has hit the fan".

That was the first thing that came to mind.

Erm,,, :ask:

"Feel like falling in love with the first woman i meet, putting her in a wheel barrow and Wheeling her down the street...People are crazy and times are strange, I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range...I used to care but, things have changed".

Lines, paragraphs, same thing :)

Blue Rodeo wrote:
Funny how you can look in vain
Living on nerves and such sweet pain
The loneliness that cuts so fine
To find the face you've seen a thousand times

Gnarls Barkley wrote:
There are hills and mountains between us, always somethin' to get over
Needless to say it's a wonderful day, I just noticed how nice it was to know ya
Oh but be ready to sacrifice; if you love 'em you should tell 'em twice
Because when everything that's alive, ultimately dies
...Don't be surprised

Here are a couple from the same song.

Queensryche Roads to Madness wrote:Time measures rusts as it crawls. I see its face in the looking glass - stop! This screaming laughter hides, the pain of its reality.

Smore of Roads to Madness wrote:I'm awaiting endlessly, pounding rhythms echo me. Won't you take me somewhere far beyond the void?

Greg Graffin's "Watchmaker's Dial"
To believe is true religion but to see is truth at last
Oh no, too late to hold a trial, time doesn't wait for the watchmaker's dial

Just to keep things terse. This is from homeward bound by simon & garfunkel

But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.

A couple of sections from the same song ("Hotel Hobbies" by Marillion)

Hotel hobbies padding dawn's hollow corridors
Bell boys checking out the hookers in the bar
Slug-like fingers trace the star-spangled clouds of cocaine on the mirror
The short straw took it's bow

....

And the only sign of life is the ticking of the pen
Introducing characters to memories like old friends
Frantic as a cardiograph scratching out the lines
A fever of confession, a catalogue of crime
In happy hour

One of my favorite lines for how it just rolls off your tongue.

"Little old lady got mutilated late last night".

Man, I've really got Warren on the brain today.

"Kicking squealing Gucci little piggy."

Obviously. Actually, the whole of Paranoid Android is brilliant.

Although The Smiths have some cracking lyrics.

I don't tend to pay attention too much to lyrics though tbh. They're usually just a load of shite.

Another Greg Graffin one... this time a Bad Religion song line:
Three thousand miles of wilderness overcome by the flow, a lonely
restitution of pavement, pomp and show. I seek a thousand answers, I
find but one or two. I maintain no discomfiture, my path again
renewed. Against the grain, that's where i'll stay, swimming upstream,
I maintain against the grain

From John Lennon's "Working Class Hero":
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be

Roxy Music - In Every Dream Home A Heartache

...I bought you mail order
My plain wrapper baby
Your skin is like vinyl
The perfect companion
You float in my new pool
De luxe and delightful
Inflatable doll
My role is to serve you
Disposable darling
Can't throw you away now
Immortal and life size
My breath is inside you
I'll dress you up daily
And keep you till death sighs
Inflatable doll
Lover ungrateful
I blew up your body
But you blew my mind

PJ Harvey - When Under Ether

Something's inside me
Unborn and unblessed
Disappears in the ether
One world to the next
