Dublin people sounded quite different back then. They don't look any different though.

Isn't that wonderful? Even that small bit of Anna Livia Plurabelle is so magical when read in his voice, with his cadence, his pacing. It's only a few short minutes long, but for years I've counted it as one of my desert island discs.

I found another reading of the whole book awhile ago, but it sounded way too rushed to me. Needs to sound like you're falling into a dream.

Can you two actually understand what he's saying without having the book in front of you?
I'm used to that type of accent and I struggle to understand in places.

No, I need the book. Especially because so many of the words were invented by him or are subtle variants of ordinary words. But every once in a while I like to listen to it without the book - just to hear the music in his voice, the rhythm and flow of the language. (I've also read that section so many times I have it pretty clearly in my mind.)

Apparently he was trying to sound like "the brogue of an Irish washer woman." I can only understand words here and there, but I have basically the same experience with reading it so that doesn't bother me too much. Just the sound is magic.
