The book "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ"

#1  Postby dylan » Mar 24, 2010 5:52 am

By Philip Pullman (wrote His Dark Materials). Too bad I have to wait a while before it comes out, but it sounds very interesting. Wonder how many news articles this one is going to make!?

Will it be as tedious as his other stuff ?. I fail to see how Christians see him as relevant.

"Scoundrel" is a fantastic word. That's my considered contribution.

Book on Jesus: Letters condemn author to eternal hell

Philip Pullman's book on life of Jesus prompts letters condemning him to 'eternal hell'

Philip Pullman is unperturbed by letters from Christians condemning him for his latest book, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, saying he's 'been getting letters of disapproval and condemnation for years'

As usual, how very 'christian' of them. Reminiscent of 'Behead those who insult Islam'...

Pullman's response here, though, is excellent. Spot on.

Phillip Pullman defends the title of the book, and the right to free speech.

I haven't yet read what this book is about, but 'His Dark Materials' trilogy are probably my favourite books of all time. Really excited at the prospect of a new book!

I believe the schtick is that Mary had twins, as depicted in the title...

I read the excerpts in the Guardian - it looks interesting, Jesus being strong and outgoing, and Christ bookish and conflicted, but with an eye to history. And a mysterious stranger encouraging Christ to write the history of "what ought to have happened".
“Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'.”
