I hope someday a good Final Fantasy game will get the treatment :tehe:

So um... not a game I play, but, the nephew called me with the news that Fortnite is gone from Apple's app store. Apparently they're gone from Apple and Google app stores. Epic got greedy, offering a workaround against the % demanded by Apple on all transactions. Greed vs greed. Epic is suing.

Recently Apple also announced they're blocking Xbox xCloud (and Stadia... but nobody uses Stadia). They have their own game subscription service to protect.

To be fair, the fees required by Apple and Google to host apps is quite significative, which is one of the reasons so many games are pay-to-win. Their goal is to lower those fees, which would benefit everyone. Except Apple and Google of course, but who cares. Apple is suing a small company called Prepear that helps people managing grocery lists, just because they have a fruit (here a pear) as a logo. And it's not even close to Apple's logo. So fuck them.

Oh yes, fuck all of them for sure. There'd need to be an insurgence of companies bucking at those app store terms - but more likely what will happen is a negotiation between the two companies. Epic, in any case, has made billions off of predatory fleecing of kids and their parents. Fortnite is a free-to-play game that somehow my nephew has spent hundreds of dollars on, over the years. These pachinko/vanity gaming models have infested the world because they're so profitable, and they leak into the work of otherwise talented developers - or push the braver ones out of the market entirely. We could have so many more CD Projekt Reds right now, but instead we get Activision-Blizzard pachinko, EA pachinko, Ubisoft pachinko, etc. (I'm averse to JRPGs, so I can't comment on the Japanese market, but... I hear overall it's just as shady. And forget China...)

lol Jim Sterling.

Uh... so there really is a parody ad. Lame. The wordplay would be cute ("Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite") except the Apple ad reference will fly over the heads of most Fortnite players - let alone the Orwell reference.

Added: The hashtag #FreeFortnite (aside from making a parody of social justice movements) just struck me as especially ironic, given the game's "free"-to-play business model. Also, yeah, extra rich considering Epic's buying of exclusivity for new projects (Metro Exodus, Outer Worlds, Borderlands 3) - funded by fleecing kids and their parents for years (which at least in Fortnite's case wasn't necessitated by app store terms, since the game's on many other platforms).

The Chinese spin on things is nice, much more visceral and less opaque imo than Japanese myths... even though ultimately it’s all Indian. ;)

Picked up Dead Cells on a total whim and really loving the shit out of it. It's basically doing everything that Dark Souls promised but never delivered! Your character doesn't feel like a clunky dead weight moving around so you actually have a sense that you're to blame for your fuckups, weapon sets change how you play the game in a way that is actually interesting and since you're constantly unlocking stuff you always feel like you're making progress. I remember joking once that DS should take its tedium to the max and just have you start from the very beginning whenever you die. Well DC does just that, and it's the exact opposite of tedious -- I can't stop playing

I keep hearing great things about Dead Cells, but it just didn't grab me. I played for about 90 mins without dying and it just felt super samey.

Dead Cells was one of the best platformers I played in the last year. Utter brilliance.

Preferred Hollow Knight though. Another platformer that takes from the Dark Souls blueprint.
