I bought this:

She signed it for me too, which is nice. But that's it, I'm definitely not buying any more books before I move abroad. :shifty: Jesus Christ, I weighed just the ones I had to bring the other day and they were nearly 6kg. And my DVDs are 5kg. I only have a 20kg limit. Looks like I'll be wearing everything I own on the plane.

You could carry another 5 kg for a little over Rs. 1000. :)

Time to consider an e-reader? (Don't know how you get a signed edition in electronic form though!)

No books! This thread should be retitled so I don't get excited about reciting my shopping list only to be let down when I read the OP!

I bought a new bathroom suite today, and tiles, and bits and bobs the plumber needs to install everything. I have change from £300. I'm happy!

The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins.
One day my student budget will cease to exist and I'll be able to buy as many books as my heart desires.

Then I will dominate this thread -_-

I recently bought:

On the Road - Jack Kerouac. It was like nothing I had ever read before and I recommend it with all my being.
Lolita - just finished. I liked it; it was surprisingly funny.
In Cold Blood - Truman Capote. I started this a couple of days ago and it is brilliant.
Crime and Punishment - scared it might be hard :(

I actually found that one easier to read than The Brothers Karamazov, although both are brilliant.

Wow, so is everyone here like me in that I buy a lot of books but slowly get through them? I have so many books on my shelves that I haven't read because I usually pick things up because I want to read them and I don't want to forget to read them! Recent ones that I've gotten...

Voodoo Histories - David Aaronovitch

Struck by Lightning (the Curious World of Probabilities) - Jeff Rosenthal (I hope this is like the Drunkard's Walk, which I loved)

Don't Sleep Where There are Snakes - Daniel Everett (from the description: "Everett began his linguistic work as a Christian missionary, but the Pirahã were marvelously impervious to his promise of a life with Jesus. They pointed out that Everett simply had no proof for the supernatural world he described, and in the end he found himself agreeing with them. He left the church, choosing a world that more honestly integrated his goals as a scholar with the world view of his Pirahã friends—one where evidence matters.")

59 Seconds - Richard Wiseman

A History of God - Karen Armstrong

I haven't read any of them yet, but I'm slowly making my way through the books I have on my shelves...I've resolved not to buy any more until I've read everything I own (yeah right!)

Like br0k3nglass, I found it easier than Karamazov. In fact, I was gripped to the page; found it a thrilling read.

Yeah, right!

Oh, and OT, I just got Patrick Rothfuss' The Name Of The Wind, thanks to GreyICE's write-up on another thread.

The last thing I purchased was a Meat Feast pizza which was very nice. Bookwise the last thing I bought was Azincourt by Bernaard Cornwall.

Pre-orders? Sartre and Twain? If they are still churning 'em out, it doesn't say much for their views on the afterlife!

Where did you get it from? It was one of the books I was considering buying, but it was one of those 'available from these sellers' books on Amazon, and that always puts me off.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I'll probably end up reading The Brothers Karamazov too. The only Dostovesky I've read is Notes from the Underground for a philosophy class and I enjoyed it.

I've read that Twain requested a 100-year hold on the publication of his autobiography, but I'm not sure how true this is. A couple of news sources have mentioned it, but with the quality of news journalism these days...

As for Sartre: this particular screenplay was lost until a few years ago. This is the first English translation of it (unfortunately, my French isn't good enough to read original works by a wordsmith like Jean-Paul).

I've recently bought a crapload of basic history books. I started reading some of Christopher Hitchens' stuff, and every so often there is a reference to something in history about which I am clueless. It has shamed me into doing something about my void of knowledge in that subject.
