Loved it. Great script and casting. Especially the two Amys. Shades of Roald Dahl. Poor little Amy. All ready and sitting on her suitcase waiting for her "Raggedy Doctor" who never turned up again. Then having to endure 12 years of shrinks using psycho babble to tell her she imagined all of it. Small wonder she bit them and whacked The Doctor with a cricket bat when he finally did arrive.

I only saw one episode ever and it was so fucking stupid I vowed never to watch another episode again ever.

Unless someone can convince me that the episode I saw was just one silly episode in another wise good programme?

(episode was "Titanic" Christmas special)

It made sense when I was a kid but seems to be made to appeal to kids these days.

The Titanic Christmas special wasn't the most shining example to have watched, no.

It is I think-mostly. Hence it's showing just after teatime on Saturday when most families settle down to watch the box. However as I said before the casting and script were great. Things for kids, things for adults.

Things for atheists even. The bit where young Amy has an evening prayer session asking for help in the issue of the crack in her bedroom wall which talks gets cut short by the noisy arrival of The Tardis and she ends with a superbly timed "I'll call you later". Then she proceeds to view and participate in what came next with an open and inquiring mind.

I doubt that part where the policewoman said she also dressed as a nun and things would have happened in the days of Mary Whitehouse. It was fairly obvious what she was saying about her real profession.

"CookieJon"

I should have directly said it was a prayer to Santa. Apologies.

I found it difficult to include this in my writing along with the idea that Amy's guardian-her aunt must have been some kind of God-Bot. No kid that I know of would kneel in front of her bed. Then place her elbows on that bed, put her palms together and commence to pray out loud so said guardian could hear her.

All I can say about that is you know nothing about women. Editing this somewhat I soften my riposte with the following recount of a common experience in encountering our feminine fellows:

Oh yes you do (in response to my original reply)

This is getting confusing. Maybe Amy did. Interesting territory for the writers to explore but all we got in the way of back story was a wedding dress in a wardrobe.

The Titanic xmas episode was pretty poor - not a good example of the show. Basically it has its really excellent episodes, and a good number of crap or so-so ones. If you get a chance, watch 'Blink' from the year before last, or 'The Empty Child' from the Ecclestone season - chances are that these might soften your stance on the show, though I confess that these were exceptionally good episodes. (both of which were written by Steven Moffat, BTW - who's now the executive producer on the show, which gives me high hopes for this season.)

The Human Nature/Family of Blood 2-parter from 2008, and many of the last season's episodes are well worth seeing.
I found the Titanic ep to be one of the worst I've ever seen from the series.

Sci-fi have been showing some old Doctor Who this week end.
Tom Baker is my top Doctor. I can barely remember his regeneration back in '73.

Re: Doctor Who [SPOILERS]

Minor niggles: crap titles; himself very much aware of and playing up to his legendary status; Neil Gaiman fairytale-isms at start - always makes me think of Charlie Brooker's witheringly sarcastic praise of the Coca-Cola 'holidays are coming' commercial as 'the most magical advertisement of all time'; usual over-egging the pudding of mouth-open wonder at start and end complete with 'welcome to Jurassic Park' musical swells; the crack in the bedroom wall... sigh - that's another one ticked off, so I guess that leaves monsters under the bed and behind the sofa, but....

Aside from that I really enjoyed it, in fact I think I enjoyed it more than anything since Lance Parkin's The Gallifrey Chronicles. It still does what RTD DW did except it did it well for the most part instead of coming across like Rentaghost trying to be Star Wars. It did what it said on the tin. The jokes actually made me laugh when I was trying my hardest to frown. Extra points for Patrick Moore, Annette Crosbie, and Nina Wadia. And bloody hell - even a decent companion.

This was the first Doctor Who that actually felt like Doctor Who to me in a while, or at least as much like Doctor Who as the McGann film, bit moreso in fact. Just hope he doesn't blow it by commissioning crap writers for the rest of the series.

Funny - they're some of the things I enjoyed the most about it! ;-) (Loved the scary crack in the wall!)

And since you mentioned Neil Gaiman, you may already know...
