Nicholas Cage - is there no beginning to his talent.

Actually, I think he was fantastic in Raising Arizona and Wild At Heart. Oh, and Moonstruck, but I didn't actually like that movie :shifty:

Though generally I agree, any time I see his terminally confused gaze on a poster, it's pretty much guaranteed to be a piece of crap.

He was ok in Wild at Heart I suppose, but then, he and Laura Dern both played fairly narrow stereotypes in that film, so ...

I don't doubt that largely played into his selection for the role

And in Laura Dern's selection too methinks...though she did play the 'hot n wild' thang pretty well...

Let's just say I managed to suspend disbelief for those parts

Haven't seen anything she did before that...I thought she was great in Inland Empire.

Actually, you're right. Seven Samurai deserves to be on the top of the list for a little while at least.

Thirded. You only have to look at The Magnificent Seven as comparison, to see the superiority of Seven Samurai.

The same applies to Fistful of Dollars & For a Few Dollars More. good films in themselves and better remakes than the Magnificent Seven was, but nowhere near as good as the originals; Yojimbo & Sanjuro.

imo :coffee:

Seven Samurai is definitely my favorite Kurosawa movie. But I'd have to pick Ikiru as the best movie of his I've seen (and I've seen most of them.) But I personally like Seven Samurai more, because I can't watch Ikiru without bawling.

What makes a great movie great?
Movies are complex works of art, and so there is more than one aesthetic aspect to consider:

1. narrative design (screenplay/story)
2. photographic design (picture design)
3. scenic design (set design)
4. performance of the actors/actresses

A great movie is one which is extraordinarily good with regard to 1-4. Of course, this still doesn't answer the question of the respective criteria for aesthetic greatness or goodness with regard to 1-4.

Why is ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN (1958/1993 [remake]) not the greatest film of all times?

Just watched Mullholland Drive. Man, that was the craziest movie. It was awesome.

The Seventh Seal is one of the all-time greats and haunts me still, many, many years after first watching; OH, being asked, suggested Zulu as one of his favourites. Me, I've always loved Room With a View, but I'm a Forsterian and I enjoy Merchant Ivory.

I didn't get it either - which sort of got in the way of enjoying it for me -- I loved Blue Velvet though.

Casablanca is my all-time favorite. It’s movie perfection. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve watched it.

I recently got (as a gift) the 70th Anniversary Limited Collector's Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo. A must have for any Casablanca fan.

I'd add to that list directing, editing, and in some cases sound/music.
