I watched a colourful little film called The Final Girls the other day. Taissa Farmiga is the daughter of a long-struggling actress, whose only real fame is as a victim in an 80s slasher film (basically Friday the 13th). On the anniversary of her mother's death, Taissa attends a showing of the film and, after a fire in the theatre, she and her friends end up in the movie. Lots of jokes follow. Nothing jumps out that hasn't been done before, but this one just works a little better than most. I think it's the acting.

I never thought I'd be tearing up during a strip routine set to Bette Davis Eyes. :waah:

That's the magic of film, causing unexpected reactions in the viewer.

I watched Pay the Ghost the other night. It has had serious repercussions for my marriage. It took a lot to allow US to bring a second film featuring Nicholas Cage across the threshhold to our treasured sanctuary, but I told myself I needed to trust in his decisions. 'We like The Knowing', he trilled girlishly. I now sit here bereft. How could someone I have given 23 years of my life to treat me with such overt contempt?

Is there anything better than an attempt to copy Tarantino? :ask:

Watched the force awakens on DVD. It was ok, I guess.

I'm surprised so many people thought it was great. Still, it passed a couple of pleasant enough hours I suppose.

I didn't realize it was copying Tarantino.

Well, that was my impression with all the dialogue interspersed with ultraviolence.

Sadly, the DVD didn't have commentary by the film makers, which would have been every bit as good as the actual movie.

I just finished watching Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell which was every bit as dumb as it sounds but I started thinking rather early into it that the "Beach" looked eerily familiar to me and, sure enough, it was Pensacola Beach. That's probably how it ended up on my watchlist in the first place. It wasn't even the worst film I've seen, I may have even laughed a few times, and it was actually rather fun to see so many places I'm familiar with in it, like our Civil War fort (Ft. Pickens). I kept thinking, though, those guys should have used sunscreen. People don't realize how our white sand reflects sunlight and they end up getting sunburned very quickly.

For the most part I agree with the Nostalgia Critic.

I will disagree though: Affleck's Batman HAD NO FUCKING DIRECTION OR CHARACTER.

Affleck's Bruce Wayne was fine in those moments he acted like Bruce Wayne such as flirting with Diana but much like with Lex Luthor, the character of Bruce Wayne and Batman were sacrificed to try to put all of this in the story.

In the Dark Knight Returns series (the basis for most modern Batman interpretation)Batman "kills" the Joker (the Joker fakes a suicide to incriminate Batman but well the Joker is fucking awesome).

In my opinion THAT would have been an opening for the film. Not the pathetic rehash of Bruce's parents being killed. Batman a vigilante with a get the job done attitude (but still never kills anyone) all of a suddenkills the Joker. That should be what gets Superman's attention. Which it does in the Dark Knight Returns comics. From there you can have Batman be concerned with the unchecked power Superman possesses and in the film I want to see Bruce Wayne and Batman do fucking detective work, not just hack into a lab, but actually try to figure out Superman's weakness.

And I felt that was missing.

Doomsday could have been saved for the first Justice League film or even another Superman film. And same with Lex Luthor.

Anyways, just my ramblings. I am a Marvel fan more than a DC fan, but STILL I felt this film had way too many subplots and unnecessary things which subtracted from a source material which I really love.

So.... Captain America Civil War.

First of all, I need to make an annoncement. I'm in love with Emily Van Camp. And this has nothing to do with me having being binge watching Revenge for the last 3/4 weeks.

This said, let's talk about the movie itself. I read some of the recent critics lately, and they were all extremely positive about this movie. And they're mostly true. The film is brilliant, and can be compared, in some ways, as the first Avengers. Some character setting, one major action scene (one of the best I've ever seen), punctuated with some very funny moments, mostly thanks to an excellent Spiderman, and a very good Ant-Man.
But there's a problem. Maybe it's just because I read the Civil War comics when they came out, some years ago, but I found almost offensive that the reason for the partition is just revenge. Yes, that again  . In the comics, what makes Cap go rogue is his righteousness. Here, it's just an investigation he needs to lead to clear his buddy's name. And in the final threesome we got a glimpse into in one of the trailers, the reason why Tony goes mad is because he discovers Bucky killed his parents, and Cap knew all along. And in the meantime, the new character, also lead by revenge, chooses to step down because he discovers he was wrong.
So Tony, the mastermind, the lead, succombs to revenge, when a pure warrior doesn't.

That sounded very wrong, and killed the last 15 mn of the movie to me.
I can't get rid of this bitter taste I have, despite having had a VERY good time with the rest of the movie.
Of course, I understand the reasons for the choices in the scenario, having an idea about the big picture of the plans for the MCU in the next years. It just doesn't feel right.

I wasn't that bothered by the ending, but then I never read the comics. My own main criticism is the effects weren't as good as they should've been in some places. Is that head pasted on, Tony?

Maybe shouldn't have rushed out to beat the competition. Especially now we know it was never a threat.

I thought I'd already mentioned it, Tom Holland was amazing as Spiderman. Or more precisely; he was Spiderman. Seriously, he's the best iteration of that character ever. I'm looking forward to his own film.
