This is so sad. Strand was one of the finest poets of the past half century. I really, really love his work.

Personally, it felt like an eerie coincidence: a few days ago I suddenly started focusing on Strand — reading through several books of his poetry, listening to an interview with him, reading his essays on art (very perceptive; he trained as a painter under Albers before he turned to writing), looking carefully at the paintings about which he had written, etc. Yesterday I bought one of his last books, and I was reading it today when I got the news from a friend of mine.

Edit: I just checked; the book I bought yesterday, "Almost Invisible", was in fact his last work.

Many people here probably don't understand, but a cricket ball is solid and is [sometimes] thrown in the direction of the batsman at speeds of about 100mph. That's a lethal missile. My only surprise wrt recent events is that this sort of thing hasn't happened more often. As always, we have to wait for weeks like this before rules are implemented to prevent the bleedin' obvious. Let's hope that this now happens.

John Jeremy Thorpe
(29 April 1929 – 4 December 2014)
British former politician who was leader of the Liberal Party from 1967 to 1976 and Member of Parliament (MP) for North Devon from 1959 to 1979.
His political career was severely damaged when an acquaintance, Norman Scott, claimed to have had a love affair with Thorpe in the early 1960s, at a time when homosexual acts were illegal in Britain. The scandal forced Thorpe to resign as Liberal Party leader in 1976. He denied the claims of a homosexual affair and was charged with conspiring to murder Scott, though he was acquitted of these charges in 1979, shortly after losing his seat in the general election.
