Scientific claims in the Koran

#1  Postby campermon » May 22, 2012 7:25 pm

Hi all,

Is there anywhere on the webz with a list of scientific claims from the koran and their subsequent debukation (is that a word/ ;) ) ?

The reason i ask is that I had a really interesting discussion with one of my very bright science students who is adamant that the Koran is a source of accurate scientific knowledge. He's really into it and started quoting some dr zakir naik to me (he's seen all the videos). He was very surprised that I'd heard of that particular fruitcake!!

Anyway. I'm looking for a list of claims and debunks, a little like 'answersingenesis'.

I've done some searching but can't find anything that fits the bill i.e. Claim => Debunk.

Your help is appreciated in advance! :)

Some of the claims stand as refutations all on their own, with no debunking needed. Behold:

Image

Moving on to the fourth statement which says “then We made the alaqah into a mudghah (chewed substance)…” The Arabic word mudghah means “chewed substance.” If one were to take a piece of gum and chew it in his or her mouth and then compare it with an embryo at the mudghah stage, we would conclude that the embryo at the mudghah stage acquires the appearance of a chewed substance. This is because of the somites at the back of the embryo that “somewhat resemble teeth marks in a chewed substance.”

Basically, it's another instance of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy run rampant. Painting apologetic bullet holes around scientific discoveries after the scientists have alighted upon them. If this book of myths was so fucking marvellous, how come it didn't give us the Navier-Stokes Equations in the Middle Ages? How come we had to wait for 19th century European scientists to alight upon them? How come it didn't give us general relativity 600 years before Einstein? How come it failed even to give us Newtonian mechanics before Newton came along? Oh, that's right, it's all made up shit, and all the hot air about this book of myths supposedly being a fantastic repository of scientific knowledge is merely more made up shit.

Theislammiracle channel on YouTube is worth a look:

Not a direct debunkation, but this one's always worth a watch, just to remind ourselves how easily it can all slip away when the fundaloons get in charge:

Ten brief debunkings here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XLg-SRGMNk&feature=plcp. Mostly showing that the Koranic misunderstanding isn't even original, or came after people knew better anyway. Nice closing scene.

(My underline) No, the correct term is deburqation (n., as in, removing an unnecessary amount of stuff that keeps out fresh air and hides what there is no reason to hide, from, Wisdom of Nils, volume 7)
