Yeah, they are close, but I'm just moved a bit more by Cash. :dunno:

The sound isn't sad, but the lyrics are depressing.

Jeff Buckley, Dido's Lament

This is a piece, for a mezzo-soprano voice, from Dido and Aeneas, an opera composed by Henry Purcell in 1681. Jeff performed it live in his exhibition at Meltdown Festival, London, on July 1 1995.

Thy hand, belinda, darkness shades me.
On thy bosom let me rest.
More I would, but death invades me.
Death is now a welcome guest.

When I am laid in earth, may my wrongs create
    No trouble in thy breast.
Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.

    - Henry Purcell

Jesse Cook & Holly Cole

Blood would flow
Flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrows rain will wash the stains away
Something in our minds will always stay

On and on
The rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star
On and on
The rain will say
How fragile we are
How fragile we are

Perhaps this final light was meant
To clench a lifetimes argument
But nothing comes from violence
And nothing ever could
All those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on
The rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star
On and on
The rain will say
How fragile we are
How fragile we are

On and on
The rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star
On and on
The rain will say
How fragile we are
How fragile we are

Excellent choice!
I just love her voice and musical attitude. I don't care for her IRL, but fortunately nobody else really seems to either.
I wish she'd hurry up and release a new album already.

She's a real artists I think. Her personal life is famously quite a mess, she's vilified in the popular press for getting drunk in public, having a partner who has been in prison, and for doing drugs, having tattoos and being sweary (something that wouldn't even raise an eyebrow if she were a male singer in a rock band), and yet she can distil all that calamity into beautifully pointed songs delivered with real and unabashed honesty. I love this version of this song - I prefer it to the album track - you can hear just how good the lyrics are and what a cracking set of pipes Ms Winehouse has. Please Amy, make more CDs.

Didn't know this one, but what a cool sound and a lovely atmosphere. Tasty bit of sax towards the end too....
